Resection of the apex of the root as a way to preserve the tooth

Resection of the apex of the root of the tooth is a surgical intervention consisting in removing the tip of the root of the diseased tooth with the aim of curing and preserving it. In medical practice, resection of small molars and central incisors is more often performed.

Resection of the apex of the tooth root is indicated in the case of:

  • Education on the tip of the tooth root of the cyst;
  • The impossibility of the usual treatment of a tooth decayed due to its long-term sealing;
  • Significant curvature of the tooth canals;
  • Presence of a foreign body in the dental root;
  • Exacerbation of periodontitis;
  • Fracture of the root of the tooth;
  • Presence of perforation of the root wall of the tooth.

In some cases, resection of the root of the tooth is considered ineffective and inexpedient. Such cases include:

  • Exacerbation of acute or chronic periodontitis ;
  • Strong mobility of the tooth ;
  • Presence of a large granuloma in the root of the tooth;
  • Complete destruction of the dental root.

This operation is contraindicated in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Resection of the apex of the tooth root can not be performed at the time of the patient's disease with angina, acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory infections, influenza, etc.

Often the main occupation of a dental surgeon, contrary to popular belief, is not the removal of the problem tooth, but the implementation of measures to save it. The tooth is to be removed, as a rule, only in rare cases, when the usual dental therapies are already inactive. Resection of the apex of the root of the tooth, successfully carried out in surgical dentistry over the past decades, is one of the main ways of preserving the teeth. Such an operation is carried out under infiltration, or conductive anesthesia and consists of the following.

A small incision is made on the gum of the aching tooth, through which the tooth root site is subsequently cut out, where the inflammatory process, cyst or granuloma is localized. After this procedure, the specialist gets access directly to the root of the tooth and puts a seal on it to prevent further development of the inflammation. Rapid healing of the wound is facilitated by the introduction into it of special preparations that promote the rapid regeneration of tissue. Gum incision is to be stitched. After the gums are healed, a crown can be placed on the resuscitated tooth.

After the procedure, the patient is not allowed to eat solid and spicy food. In addition, every three months during the year after the operation it is recommended to visit your dentist and do an x-ray of the root of the tooth.

The operation to remove the apex of the tooth root is one of a few minor traumatic, though very complicated, surgical interventions. It is conducted, as a rule, under the usual conditions of a dental clinic. The operation is preceded by mandatory depulpation (removal of the pulp or nerve bundle) if the dental nerve has not yet been removed. This procedure under modern conditions is carried out quite quickly and painlessly for the patient.

It should be remembered that the removal of the tip of the dental root is a surgical intervention, which means that, like any operation, it can cause complications (reduced tooth resistance, gum inflammation due to infection), which today, fortunately, are extremely rare.

Resection of the tip of the root allows you to postpone tooth extraction for a long period of time. Usually, for several years of life, a tooth that has undergone such a procedure no longer bothers its owner. In addition, if necessary, its root can be used as a support for prosthetics. The main disadvantage of this method of treatment is the destruction of the anatomical integrity of the tooth, which leads, as a rule, to a decrease in its main function due to the shortening of the root.
