Rating of ATP in tennis: counting, current state

Today it is difficult to imagine that in big tennis there were times when there was no concept of "first racket", and participation in major tournaments depended not on objective indicators, but on the national federations and bias of the organizers. The rating of the ATP has become a revolution in the development of sport, which contributes to attracting a huge number of professional athletes, striving to achieve heights.

History of rating creation

In 2013, on a big scale, the 40th anniversary of the system of ranking professional tennis players was celebrated, in which legends of sports took part. Established in 1972, the men's tennis association (ATP) officially unveiled the rating of professionals after the year of its activity based on the results of the game season. On a huge calculating machine were displayed the figures of 186 athletes, led by Ilie Nastase.

Over the years, the system underwent minor changes: in 2009, the existing rating of the championship race was canceled, the number of points for the performance in the Grand Slam tournaments changed, their ratio between the winner and the finalist (from 75% to 50%), the rating trophy was canceled - bonuses for victory over obviously stronger rivals, introduced the concept of "mandatory" tournaments, for participation or non-participation in which the accrual of points. The main thing left is the elimination of subjectivity in admission to competitions, which attracted about two thousand professional tennis players to the sport.

Main Tournaments

Ranking results are updated weekly, 52 times for the game season, lasting from January to November. Introducing the rating of tennis players, ATP assumed, in accordance with it, to select for competitions, which, in turn, also have their own rank. The most points you can earn for good results in BS tournaments (2000 winners). There are only four of them: open championships in Australia (January), France (May - June), Great Britain (July - August), USA (August - September). For top athletes, participation is compulsory, which does not allow them to relax and enjoy past achievements.

The remaining tournaments are divided by the number of maximum points for the winner: ATP-250, ATP-500 and the most prestigious - ATP-1000. For beginners there are competitions (Challengers), for which titles are not awarded, but points are awarded so that they can improve the tournament position. At the end of the season in London, the final drawing for the eight best players is held, which not only reveals the winner of the year, but adds points to the current rating in excess of those scored.

Team competitions (Davis Cup) and the Olympics on the ATP rating since 2016 do not affect.

Scoring

Scoring is based on the results of eighteen tournaments. If the tennis player participated in more competitions, the worst performance will not be counted. For athletes from the TOP-30 there are features that are presented in the table.

Regardless of the reasons for not participating in compulsory tournaments, the player is credited with 0 points, which leads to a fall in his rating. At the end of the season there is a rationing: the tennis players' points are multiplied by a certain coefficient in order to reduce the difference with the leader if he scored more than 4000 points. The coefficient is calculated by the formula: K = 4000: k1, where k1 is the number of points of the winner. The rating of the ATP also provides for an annual confirmation of points. Winning the tournament BSH obliges a tennis player to successfully perform for the next year, as his 2000 points will be canceled and replaced with the number earned in the same competition in the new season.

The ranking system for women

If men have an ATP rating, women are guided by the criteria developed by the Women's Professional League (BTA) in 1975. They are slightly different from the male. Points are awarded based on the results of the matches won in any professional tournament, the crediting number of which is slightly less than in the ATP - 16. In the doubles, the points are awarded to the team, and not to the individual player, and it is enough to take part in 11 competitions.

Women have restrictions on "mandatory" tournaments: players from the TOP-10 can participate in only two championships of the international category. Scoring takes place for competitions under the aegis of the amateur league. To obtain a position in the rating, the girl must either score 10 points, or play three tournaments. At the first position today is the American Serena Williams, who lost the open Australian championship of this season taking second place Angelika Kerber (Germany). The best result from Russian women in Maria Sharapova - 9. In the Top-30 are three more representatives of Russia - Svetlana Kuznetsova (13), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (27) and Ekaterina Makarova (30th place).

This attracts for the final matches of tournaments the number of fans, correlated with football championships.
