Post factum: exposure

In literature, in Internet resources and simply in everyday speech, the expression "Post factum" sometimes occurs. But does everyone know what it means? When is it appropriate to use it? Is it possible to replace this phrase in other words? About this and not only read further.

Post factum: value

Postfactum (with accent on the second syllable) The explanatory dictionary of the Russian language Ozhegova defines as a persistent book expression, an adverb. Literally it means "after something is done, happened, happened."

This phrase is borrowed. Post factum translation from Latin has this: "after the accomplished."

It is mainly used in jurisprudence. From there, by the way, the expression turned into everyday speech. Usually it is used in documents dealing with the arrangement, design of something after it was actually created in reality. A good example: someone issued a permit to buy after the fact. That is, he first bought, and then he was given permission to do so.

The expression of Post factum is quite appropriate to replace the more familiar words for our hearing:

  • later;
  • after;
  • after all;
  • Already after;
  • backdating.

The use of expression

However, in addition to legal documents, the expression post factum fits into ordinary speech. This is clearly seen in several examples:

  • You will already notify me about this in advance, not after the fact?
  • He told me that in his time the discussions were post factum, and not three days before the exam.
  • Is fighting crime is a message about them after the fact, rather than preventing their commission?
  • We learned the news after the fact, at the very meeting it was not told.
  • Why do you explain this after the fact, when it is already not relevant?
  • For all my requests, he stubbornly continues to react after the fact.
  • Even Natasha's friends learned about her engagement with Danil after the fact.
  • Yes, you conducted the examination, but did it after the fact.
  • It's better to say after fact, not now.
  • Unfortunately, all successful ideas come to mind after the fact, and not when they are particularly relevant.

Do not confuse!

Often we can find the expression "postscript". It is by no means an equivalent replacement of the post factum.

Postscriptum (lat.) - "written after", "after said." The tradition of writing it comes from the depths of the centuries, when people communicated with each other through letters. As a rule, at the end of the message it was necessary to "bow out" and sign. But it also happened that a person, writing a letter completely, remembered that he wanted to tell the addressee something else. Then he was saved by the postscript PS, which could also mean "after the signature." If the author was completely forgetful, then PPS followed (after the signature) and even PPPS. It is important to remember that the abbreviation "postscript" is not synonymous with the word "signature" itself. So the phrase "Masha, I love you. PS Vanya" will be incorrect.

Another PS could be put before writing information that is different from the main text. For example, the author writes to a friend a detailed story about how to properly care for apple trees. But then suddenly he remembers something that does not belong to gardening. And here: "PS And what is your cat's name? I completely forgot."

In Runet sometimes used at first glance quite illogical synonym for postscript - "ZY." However, everything is explained simply - the Latin letters P and S are located on the Russian keyboard layout on the same keys as S and N.
