Phased feeding of onions

Any plant needs care, and any care for it is watering, weeding, fertilizing and loosening. This applies to onions including. Therefore, feeding the onion is an important stage in caring for it. In this article, we will discuss how and when to fertilize the onion, and give advice and recommendations.

How many times to feed onions?

In general, the onion is good for fertilizers. The yield of this plant depends on how many nutrients it takes from the soil. Therefore, the land must be fertile, loose and light, so that your onion can be nourished from it safely. Feeding onions in spring is carried out twice, once more it is done in the summer, and in the autumn after harvesting the soil is fertilized.

The first application of fertilizers

At each phase of plant development, it should be fertilized. So the first top dressing is carried out after the shoots appear, and the feathers reach about 10 cm in length. This phase is the initial phase in development, so at this stage the main emphasis is on nitrogen fertilizers. 10 grams of fertilizer diluted with 10 liters of water, it is spent about 1.5 square meters of land. However, if the plant looks healthy, that is, the feathers have a bright green color, then it is not necessary to feed them. In general, everything depends on the soil here. If the soil is poor, then the plant will have to be fertilized in any case.

Second fertilizer application

The second top dressing corresponds to the second phase of its vegetation. This occurs about a month after sowing. At this stage, your onion no longer needs nitrogen, but there is a need for phosphorus and potassium. To do this, dilute 20-30 g of superphosphate and the same amount of sulfate per 10 liters of water and water the plants.

Third fertilizer application

Feeding the onions for the third time is carried out when the bulb is completely formed, that is, its diameter reaches at least 40 mm. At this stage of development the plant needs more calcium, since all the forces go to the maturing of the head itself. The best source of calcium is lime, which allows not only to grow large bulbs, but also reduces the acidity of the soil.

Autumn application of fertilizers

Many gardeners recommend to fertilize soil in the autumn before processing. This is done in order to saturate the depleted land for the summer and prepare it for the spring sowing of onions. To do this, use organic and minerals. As organic fertilizer serves as humus, as well as compost. Mineral fertilizers are mixed with organic fertilizers and are introduced together into the soil. The same procedure is carried out in the spring before planting.

Tips for feeding onions:

  • Fertilizers should always be added in small portions, since a strong concentration of salts is harmful to onions;
  • Before applying fertilizers, especially lime, you need to study the soil for acidity, as well as know its mechanical composition and characteristics;
  • The excess of lime can lead to incorrect perception of other fertilizers by onions;
  • Autumn digging is carried out together with the fertilizers applied to the soil to the depth of the length of the roots of the onion (about 20 cm);
  • In the spring, half of the nitrogen fertilizers are introduced into the soil and dig them together, and the rest - with the appearance of feathers onions;
  • Never apply fresh organic fertilizers, which are better than those that are ripe;
  • Fresh manure can only be applied in a diluted form, after the liquid has been at least a week in the barrel;
  • Organic attracts some pests, to fight them using tobacco dust and lime or sand with wood ash.

This is the way to feed the onion - one of the main stages of caring for the plant.
