Pallet Layout: How to replace?

The internal combustion engine consists of several parts. This is the cylinder block and the head. But also in the design there is a pallet. The latter also plays an important role. As well as in other parts of the engine, there is used a sealing element - a pallet lining. VAZ-2110 also has this element. But, like any other detail, the gasket can fail. In today's article, we will look at what this detail represents and how to replace the pallet using your own hands.

Characteristics of the pallet

This element is the bottom of the car engine (that is, the bottom of the cylinder block). What are the functions of this part? The element serves as a protective block. The oil is also stored in the oil pan. When moving, it is further cooled. Externally, the pallet is a small bath.

Also, the element is the place of collection of all impurities and particles that were formed during the operation of the piston group. In the engine tray contains small metal particles and shavings - this is the development of the elements of the crank mechanism. Often, a magnet is placed on the bottom of the pallet, which absorbs all these impurities. How it looks, the reader can see in the photo below.

This is a transmission tray. Here, too, there is a pallet lining. The automatic transmission is equipped with these magnets without fail. Thanks to them, all metal chips are attracted and retained in one place. So it does not circulate throughout the system, working as an abrasive.

The pallet is mounted with the help of fixing bolts. As well as in the place of connection of the unit with the head, a gasket is used here. It is made of cork or rubber.

On old cars, the oil pan gasket was an ordinary sealant, which was greased joints and edges.

Reasons for replacement

Often manufacturers install this part for the entire life of the car. The same can be said about the cylinder head gasket. However, if the engine has been repaired, this sealing element must also be changed. But not only repair can be a reason for replacing a part such as pallet lining. This operation is also performed with mechanical damages. For example, when the car caught a large stone or touched the pallets to the asphalt.

Deformation, extrusion

Often there is a spontaneous deformation of the gasket. It should be understood that this sealing element is subjected to high loads, pressure and temperature differences. And if from the street side air temperature can be +15 degrees, then inside the pan oil is heated to 110 degrees Celsius.

Also, the pallet lining is deformed due to high pressure in the oil system. What can cause this phenomenon? Often, oil seals and gaskets squeezes out due to a dirty venting valve of crankcase gases. The element must pass a mixture of oil vapors and condensate into the inlet pipe. If the valve does not work, under high pressure in the engine squeezes out all the sealing elements. This does not happen immediately. However, the replacement of these parts will cost a tidy sum. And not only the parts themselves are expensive, but also the work to replace them (for example, the crankshaft rear oil seal). To prevent this from happening, periodically check the ventilation system for crankcase gases.

Symptoms

The first sign on which it is possible to recognize leakage of a lining is a leak of oil in places of connection of the pallet with DVS. But since this element is the lowest point of the engine, it is not always possible to recognize the failure in time. And the scale of the problem can be different - from easy "misting" to black oil puddles. The first option is not so terrible for the car owner. Some drivers have been traveling with this years. However, if after a short stay on the asphalt oil spills formed, it is worth examining the condition of the pallet.

Also, the gasket of the pallet, which has lost its tightness, affects the oil level. It will gradually decrease. How intensive the oil will go depends on the scale of the tragedy. Driving on a "dry" engine is extremely dangerous. Once a thousand kilometers experts recommend checking the level on the dipstick. It should be above the average mark.

If it is at a minimum, the motor will experience an oil starvation. Inserts, rings and other elements work "on dry" - ellipses of cylinders and other problems are formed.

Instruments

In order to replace the pallet lining successfully, we need the following tools and details:

  • A twelve-sided combination.
  • The end wrench is "10" and "13".
  • Set of hexes.
  • Jack, stops.
  • Clean rags.
  • A portable lamp.
  • Empty capacity of 5 liters.
  • Degreaser.
  • New oil, gasket and filter.

Replacement

Having found out the first signs of a breach of the tightness of the pallet, immediately replace the gasket. But also the problem can be caused by breakdown of the "bath" itself. In this case, carefully inspect the surface of the pallet for mechanical damage - cracks, etc. If available, replace the crankcase or repair (depending on the extent of the damage).

To replace such a detail as the pallet of the engine, we need to drive the car to the pit or hang its front part with a jack (at least on one side). Since the element is at the bottom, it is important to provide quality lighting with a portable lamp. The important point - if the replacement is made in cold weather, the oil must first be heated. Allow the engine to idle for a few minutes.

Depending on the design features, it is required to remove the metal crankcase protection.

It is installed non-standardly - usually the car comes from the factory with plastic engine mudguards.

Since the crankcase is a kind of oil reservoir, when dismantling it, you need to drain all the lubricating fluid. To do this, unscrew the drain and filler plug (the latter - so as not to create a vacuum in the system, so that the oil quickly glass out). Preliminarily, place a container on the pallet. Usually, cars use up to 4-5 liters of oil. In the absence of an inspection pit, it will be difficult for us to place a bucket here - we need a flat container. To do this, we take the old canister and cut off the "sidewall" from it. We unscrew the cork and wait until all the liquid drains out.

At the next stage, we have to thoroughly wash the outside of the pallet. Usually a lot of dust accumulates on its surface (because this is the lowest part of the car). And if the gasket has broken, then on the pallet there will be also oil stains. Remove them is extremely difficult. It is necessary to use a degreaser in the form of a spray.

Using the key "for 10" unscrew the bolts securing the crankcase. Also do not forget about the bolts that are above the beam and near the resonator collector. Next, carefully remove the pallet, using a negative screwdriver at the joints.

Installation

The old pallet is removed using a clerical knife. It is important to remove all of its residues, so that the new one does not leak. Before installing the gasket (if it does not sit on the sealant), lubricate the joints with oil. Then attach the pallet with a new gasket in place.

Since the bolts are attached to the washer, the latter is set with a ribbed side towards the head of the bolt. Tighten them evenly, diagonally. Take care that the gasket does not get out of the seat. Tighten the bolts in several stages.

What next?

After that, fill in the oil (first the old one) and start the engine. We are watching to ensure that the gasket does not leak. If all is well, merge the old grease and fill in a new one. Do not forget about the oil filter. It changes with grease. Now it remains to establish the metal protection of the crankcase (if there was one) and lower the car from the jack. In this case, the replacement of such a part as the sump of the sump of the crankcase has been successfully completed.
