Nizhny Novgorod. The metro stepped over the river

The largest industrial center of the Volga region got its subway in 1985. The first line was built for eight years. The city at that time was called Gorky. Today, when he got his historical name - Nizhny Novgorod - the metro has already stepped on the right bank of the Oka, in the historical upper part of the settlement. Citizens have long been waiting for this event. Especially those who have to stand in traffic jams.

Metro map of Nizhny Novgorod

The scheme of the Nizhny Novgorod metro does not yet produce a strong impression. There are only two operating lines, and both are in the process of active construction. For today their total length reaches twenty kilometers, 14 stations function successfully. The third largest city in the Russian Federation is Nizhny Novgorod. Metro is also the third largest in Russia, despite the fact that it looks very modest on the scheme. But the large size of the city, its scattered along the banks of the two largest rivers make this kind of transport absolutely necessary. Too many people daily have to travel long distances, moving from one end of the city to the other. With such a significant volume of passenger traffic, no other type of public transport could be managed, which, naturally, Nizhny Novgorod has. The metro largely helps to solve this problem. And in the need for its further construction, no one doubts. To the Avtozvod and Sormovskaya metro lines currently operating, in the distant future a third Priokskaya line is to be added, which goes towards Meshchersky district.

Architectural features

Most of the stations of the Nizhny Novgorod subway are at a shallow depth and have a column-type structure. This is also due to economic conditions. Significant volumes of works on design and construction were made in a rather complicated historical period of the late eighties and early nineties. Only two key stations are equipped with escalator lifts: Moscow and Gorkovskaya. The path to the upper part of the city was opened by a metro bridge across the Oka, built on an individual project. It is combined with a car. The long-awaited exit of the metro line to the historic and densely populated part of the city greatly facilitated the life of many townspeople. Without this type of transport it is already difficult to imagine the life of such a large city as Nizhny Novgorod. The metro blended seamlessly into its appearance. The architectural image of the Gorkovskaya station compares favorably with those commissioned earlier. This can not but rejoice. Before our eyes, the new metro of Nizhny Novgorod is developing and being formed. Its scheme has not been fully worked out yet and is still under discussion. The sequence of its design and construction is influenced by a number of various factors, such as the prospects for holding the World Cup in the city in the distant future.
