Look for a woman: men are prone to more serious crimes under the influence of women

Contrary to the expectations of many people, men are actually less cruel and behave better when they are in each other's company. But if the women are numerically superior to men, a completely different picture can be observed. This is evidenced by research data published last week in the journal Human Nature.

Propositions of scientists

Scientists have set out to explore the assumption that a society in which men exceed women in number will suffer from an increased level of aggression caused by an excess of testosterone. Nevertheless, the researchers unexpectedly discovered the opposite picture. It turned out that the number of violent crimes committed by men actually increases when women are numerically higher than men.

Study

In order to conduct this study, the researchers used the US population census data for 2010 to determine the sex ratio in each county of the country. They then compared the data with the figures obtained from the FBI to determine if there was a correlation with the level of violent crimes committed by men (such as murders and attacks), and sexual crimes (like rape, prostitution and others committed on sexual grounds) .

The researchers found that severe murder, aggravated assaults, rape, sexual crimes and prostitution were more common in districts where more women live than men. At the same time, districts with a large number of men have lower rates of crime and aggressive behavior. These results challenge the conventional belief that an excessive number of men lead to an increased level of violence.

How to explain the results

Scientists explain that violence should not be regarded as an integral characteristic of masculinity, but it is used only when it is reproductive.

For example, they argue that in societies in which women are much smaller, men who are fortunate enough to have a wife or girlfriend should work more on these relationships in order to retain their partner, and therefore, most likely, they will calm down and begin to live a family life .

In contrast, when women are much larger, men are more likely to lead a more chaotic life, which will lead to constant competition with each other, and this often leads to violence.

Researchers say that their conclusions are supported by existing literature on this issue. Studies say that prostitution and trafficking in women in China tend to be less common in regions where the number of men exceeds the number of women.

Developing these results, the authors of the study warn of some aspects of the policy of brutal struggle against crime in some areas of the United States. The fact is that a sharp increase in the incarceration rates among men distorts the ratio of the population by gender, as a result of which women's communities begin to dominate, and this potentially encourages the most diverse forms of violence with which such policies are designed to fight.
