Jonathan - apples that everyone loves!

Jonathan is a sort of apples that was bred in the US from a variety called Aesop Spicenburg, which is currently not popular. The apples of Jonathan appeared at the end of the XIX century and immediately gained world recognition. This is a variety that ripens late, so it is widely distributed in southern regions where winters are mild enough. It is very popular and takes a leading place among fruit producers. Since 1954, apple trees of Jonathan variety have appeared in Ukraine. The State Register of the Russian Federation recommends the cultivation of apples of this variety in the North Caucasus.

Why do people prefer these apples

Many people love the variety Jonathan, whose apples taste great, as they are sweet and juicy. The fruits are strong, but taste like a confectionery cream. Apples have a wonderful aroma, although there is a bit of acid in them. The pulp that has just been taken from the apple tree has a greenish-white color. If the fruit is fully ripened, the flesh is light yellow and has a dense structure. This variety is great for making jam, jam or compote.

Eating fruits such as Jonathan apples, photos of which can be seen below, you get many different microelements, organic acids, vitamins. For example, ascorbic acid in 100 grams of apples contains about 6 mg.

Apples of such varieties as Memory Pavlov, Aidorred, Prime, McPhee, and others were taken from apples of Jonathan variety. Altogether there are about forty. And it's all thanks to the excellent qualities of the Jonathan apples.

Description of the plant

Apple tree varieties Jonathan, as a rule, reach a medium size. They have a round and wide crown, also of medium density. The branches of the tree often bend downward due to the severity of the ripe fruit.

Apple shoots have a greenish-brown color, the thickness can be medium or thin. The leaves are small or medium, have an elongated-ovoid shape, the edges slightly wavy. The surface of the sheet is matte, slightly wrinkled. The distinctive feature of the apple tree of the Jonathan variety was the color of the leaves. It is green, but has a bluish-silvery coating.

Blooming apple tree is abundant. 16-32% of fruits are planted with free pollination. With artificial self-pollination, 5-7% of fruits are fastened, under natural conditions - 2.5-3%.

The variety is called the beautiful man's name Jonathan. Apples are also very attractive. They are bright, juicy and beautiful. Usually the fruits are not very large, although they can grow to a decent size. One apple usually has a weight of 105-150 grams. Has a round or slightly conical shape. The skin is smooth, thin enough, but elastic and dense. Jonathan - apples are bright red, if they are grown in a cooler climate, then they have green stripes. There are light points under the skin, but they are not very noticeable. Rarely on fruits can be a light mesh.

Features of care and storage

The apples of Jonathan can ripen from the middle of September to the middle of October, and the harvest can be saved until about April. Fruits should be stored in a cool room at a temperature of 0 to 4 degrees Celsius. It is impossible to allow sharp fluctuations in temperature, this leads to loss of mass and decay.

The humidity in the room should reach 90-95%. Also, if stored incorrectly, the fruit can become bitter, stain, fade. But on the other hand, apple trees give a rich harvest, and young trees begin to bear fruit for 4-5 years. But for a big harvest, you need to create the necessary conditions. The soil should be well-fertilized, otherwise the fruits will become shallow and will not adhere well to the branches. If fertilizers are sufficient, then from one tree you can harvest a crop of 85 kg. The maximum result of yield was registered - 490 kg of fruits from one tree.

In addition, apples perfectly tolerate transportation - this is another plus to all the benefits of the grade, which the producers appreciated.

Disadvantages of the variety

Apple trees are afraid of cold, they can freeze old wood. And this, in turn, can lead to various diseases (mold, rust, scabs) and a decrease in yield. Jonathan - apples, which can be affected by powdery mildew, so in areas where humidity is increased, they have not won much fame. During the storage of fruits in about April, there are typical for this variety stains, which spoil the appearance of apples.
