Jersey (cloth). What it is
Its name comes from the same-named island, located near the UK. However, the point in this article is not about this beautiful island, but about the kind of fabric. So, jersey (fabric) is a woolen, fairly dense knitwear, which is often added to the fibers of elastane. In addition to elastane, various other fibers are added, helping to achieve new properties from jersey. For example, increases durability.
Many women who can remember what it was 25 years ago, will confirm the fact that sewing clothes from jersey was very difficult. The fabric was capricious and yielded to sewing reluctantly. This resulted in high prices for clothing made from quality knitwear. Such things were not available to everyone, it was believed that the person who carried them, had a good income. Someone tried to sew a skirt from such a fabric at home, but quickly abandoned this venture. The most agile tried to sew a thing with one continuous seam. Prices for finished goods and the fabric itself were very different, so those who managed to sew things to themselves, saved a large amount of money.
But, as is known, progress does not stand still, manual work has been replaced by quality sewing machines, and sewing from jersey has become a simpler occupation. Accordingly, prices for knitted goods quickly crept down, and tailors engaged in individual tailoring, do not open their noses at the sight of this fabric.
But, like any other material, jersey (fabric) requires some attention. Care of it depends on the type of fibers that were used in production. But any type of this fabric is allowed to be washed in a drum, also subjected to pressing and drying. However, do not do this at maximum speed.
