Jersey (cloth). What it is

Its name comes from the same-named island, located near the UK. However, the point in this article is not about this beautiful island, but about the kind of fabric. So, jersey (fabric) is a woolen, fairly dense knitwear, which is often added to the fibers of elastane. In addition to elastane, various other fibers are added, helping to achieve new properties from jersey. For example, increases durability.

According to the structure of jersey - a fabric that consists of woven yarns made of wool, synthetics, silk or cotton. Using elastane allows you to give it some degree of elasticity, which positively affects the convenience of things from this material. Things sewn from this type of material are pleasant to the touch, perfect for daily wear, besides, they absorb moisture well.

If you plunge into history and look at textile production, you can see that in the original form only woolen threads were used for the production of jersey. As many already guessed, originally this fabric appeared on the island of Jersey, which was its supplier to many countries. Due to the fact that the jersey is a dense fabric, it was used to produce work clothes. And only after years it attracted the attention of fashion designers and became actively used for sewing simple clothes.

Many women who can remember what it was 25 years ago, will confirm the fact that sewing clothes from jersey was very difficult. The fabric was capricious and yielded to sewing reluctantly. This resulted in high prices for clothing made from quality knitwear. Such things were not available to everyone, it was believed that the person who carried them, had a good income. Someone tried to sew a skirt from such a fabric at home, but quickly abandoned this venture. The most agile tried to sew a thing with one continuous seam. Prices for finished goods and the fabric itself were very different, so those who managed to sew things to themselves, saved a large amount of money.

But, as is known, progress does not stand still, manual work has been replaced by quality sewing machines, and sewing from jersey has become a simpler occupation. Accordingly, prices for knitted goods quickly crept down, and tailors engaged in individual tailoring, do not open their noses at the sight of this fabric.

Jersey - a fabric with a number of positive sides, thanks to which, and received such a spread. First of all, things made from this kind of fabric, perfectly tolerate the process of washing: do not stretch and do not settle. In addition, such things are a great solution for those who are going on a trip. Long stay in suitcases will not spoil their appearance, and ironing will not be required.

But, like any other material, jersey (fabric) requires some attention. Care of it depends on the type of fibers that were used in production. But any type of this fabric is allowed to be washed in a drum, also subjected to pressing and drying. However, do not do this at maximum speed.
