Installing programs from Ubuntu repositories

Everyone who uses a computer has to download various applications. In most cases, installing programs is a very simple process that runs automatically.

Many users mistakenly believe that installing applications in Ubuntu will not require all available knowledge, and complex sets of commands will have to be entered manually. Everything is completely different. Even the most prepared user can easily cope with this task, despite the fact that the installation of programs in Linux is fundamentally different from the similar action in Windows. The easiest way for beginners is to download programs from the Ubuntu Application Center.

Installing from the repository in the GUI

Ubuntu provides an Application Center that stores tested and paid programs and packages. Installing programs from the repository greatly simplifies the process and ensures the correct operation of applications.

Before installation, you need to run the repository by clicking on its icon, which can be found in the vertical panel on the left (when you hover over the icon, its name will appear - "Ubuntu Application Center"). On the main page of the repository on the left is a category block, in the center of the top of the page - new programs, at the bottom - applications that received the highest user ratings.

In the category block are all kinds of sections: the Internet, office, games, system, multimedia, etc. If you expand any of them, you can see all the programs included in it. Applications that are already installed on the computer are marked with green checkmarks.

To quickly find a program, its name must be entered in the search box, which is on the upper left. Then, enable the search and wait for the application icon to appear in the results window. After clicking on it, a field with two buttons "Details" and "Install" will drop out. If you need to download the software, then click on the appropriate button, and the installation of the programs will start automatically. Before downloading, you can see the screenshots, read the description and feedback about the program, which you need to click on the "Details" button.

Installing from the repositories through the terminal

Installing programs in Ubuntu from the repository through the terminal is a quick and easy process, during which you can download multiple applications at the same time. For this you need to know just one simple team.

To call the terminal, you need to enter the "Main Menu". This is the topmost icon in the sidebar on the left. Then open the "Standard" section and select "Terminal". A window opens in which you need to enter the command "sudo apt-get install" and the name of one or more applications listed with a space. The "sudo" command provides superuser privileges, "apt-get" allows you to download software from the repositories automatically, "install" gives the installation command. After pressing Enter you will need to enter your system password through which the user enters Ubuntu. You should know that when you type the password, the characters are not displayed (most likely, you will see markers). After that, the installation of the programs begins. To delete unnecessary more components, you must enter the same command, changing the word "install" to "remove".

All downloaded applications can be found in the relevant sections in the "Main Menu".
