How to glue tiles on drywall: step by step instruction and recommendations of professionals. Plasterboard on the tile: is it worth gluing?

Specialists call gypsum cardboard a real wand. With its help you can make slopes, build an arch, erect a partition, quickly level the surface. And with the advent of waterproof sheets of drywall it became possible to conduct many works with its use in rooms with high humidity - in bathrooms, in kitchens, even in baths. However, the GKL requires further finishing. And in the rooms described for these purposes most often used tile. In this connection, many masters have a completely legitimate question: "Is it possible to glue tiles on drywall?"

We will not keep the intrigue, but we will immediately give a positive answer. Drywall under the tile as the base fits perfectly. However, to ensure that the final result was of high quality, and the tile coating pleased the owner for many years, certain conditions must be observed. Therefore, we suggest to consider in detail how to glue the tiles on plasterboard: step by step, with a description of all the nuances of installation directly to the GCL and the installation of tiles. And start with the issue of preparing the surface to be finished.

Is it possible to mount drywall on the tile?

Usually GCR is used in cases where leveling by the traditional method - by plastering - seems to be quite laborious and costly financially. In simple terms, when the walls are so crooked that the building mixtures for their preparation can be calculated not just by sacks, but literally almost by dump trucks. As a rule, such surfaces are found in houses of old construction. And if we talk about the bathrooms, then at the time of repair, they are often already covered with old tiles. And then the house master is forced to think about whether it is possible to mount drywall on the tile - the old facing coating? To answer this question, we need to make a small digression.

When arranging the gypsum board surface, two methods are used: the installation of sheets on the frame and direct gluing to the wall. First, let's talk about the first option. If the old cladding is in a more or less acceptable condition, then after the appropriate preparation, which we will discuss below, it is possible to install gypsum plasterboard on a tile using a wireframe method. If it is decided to mount the GKL directly to the wall, the answer will be unambiguously negative. The old coating must be cleaned. Even if it seems at first glance that it is strong enough. The fact is that after the end of the procedure, a very serious load will fall on him. And how it behaves afterwards is unknown. So, rule number one: you can not glue drywall on the tile! Next - the very procedure of preparation.

We prepare the surface

Take the most common variant for the beginning: there is a tile on the wall. There are two ways. Either remove everything, or leave the old cladding. It is worth saying that the procedure for getting rid of tiles is very dirty and time consuming. And not every master desires to contact her. Therefore, since we agreed that if there is a tiled roofing, the GKL can only be installed in a skeleton way, the tile can be left. But at the same time, a thorough audit of her condition and remove all the elements that do not stick well on the wall. It is desirable to coat the resulting voids with a plaster solution. If most of the old facing surface is in poor condition, the tile must be removed. And all. Rule number two: all tiles from the wall are removed in the event that more than 40% of the coating is damaged.

Further on, as for the next steps. If you plan to glue the plasterboard to the wall, the surface will have to be plastered. And not just so, but as much as possible. If the wireframe technology is chosen, it is enough to treat the walls with an antiseptic primer after removing the tiles. In the same cases, if the surface was not tiles, but paint or just plaster, you can get by with little blood. It is only necessary to clean the walls and walk along them with a soil containing antimicrobial additives.

The next step is the purchase of materials. Here, too, has its own nuances.

Choose GCR

When glued tiles on plasterboard in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in other rooms, subject to temperature changes and moisture, you should remember: the basis for it must be of the appropriate type. That is, in simple words, the usual GCR does not fit. You need to buy only a moisture-resistant plasterboard. And in order not to be mistaken, the best way is to navigate by color. Such GCR have a green tint. The third rule: the tile is laid only on a waterproof base.

About the frame

Literally in a nutshell. Some house masters in the effort to save money choose the usual wooden bars as a frame. If in an ordinary room this approach is undesirable, but it is possible, then in those rooms where it is planned to subsequently tile the walls with tiles, one must strictly observe the fourth rule: the frame must be built only from the metal profile!

Tile Selection

As for design, color and other external components, here the choice is made at the discretion of the owner. The only thing worth paying attention to is that it is still recommended to purchase only quality material. Saving is strongly discouraged. But regarding the type of tiles you should follow the fifth rule: in any case do not purchase its weighted options such as porcelain stoneware. All the same gypsum board base is not a stationary wall, therefore the load on it must be minimal. Even after all it is necessary to put and glue under a tile, that only will weight the design.

Glue

You can put the tile on gypsum board in two ways: for liquid nails or for tile glue. The first option is just perfect. Fast, clean, minimum load on the structure. But very expensive. So most often the masters choose the second method. If you are one of them, follow the sixth rule: no self-prepared solutions of cement and sand! Buy only special and high-quality tile adhesive. Moreover, he is not so expensive. Domestic "Lux", for example, is good and easy in work, has an affordable price and holds excellent tiles.

After all the materials are purchased, you can proceed to the next step - the construction of the frame and the installation of drywall.

Create a foundation for tiles

Drywall will not be able to cover a wall with plasterboard. If it is decided to glue it to the wall, then for this purpose there is a special glue on which the GCR is attached. For reliability, some masters also additionally fix it with screws. With regard to the creation of a frame from the metal profile, here it is necessary to observe the seventh rule from among those that need to be followed by laying the tile on the plasterboard. Metal guides should be set at a distance of at least 40 cm from each other so that the base is as strong as possible. All work must be carried out under the control of the construction level. As for the drywall itself, it is attached to the guides by self-tapping screws. After the installation, the finished surface is treated with a primer. After it has dried, you can proceed directly to the styling process.

A small digression

It is worth noting that the actual procedure for laying ceramic tiles on the GKL differs little from that used for a more conventional concrete or plaster base. In this case, the very process of preparing and selecting a material plays a very important role in achieving the desired result. It is these steps that are basic. And so we tried to give them so much attention. Now we pass to the next step - directly to the lining.

How to glue a tile on a drywall

Begin work from the most prominent angle and from the bottom. At the level of the second row, using the construction level, marking is carried out and the pieces of the remaining profile are fixed with self-tapping screws to support the GKL under the drawn line. This is necessary to fix the first row of ceramics. The glue is not applied to the tile, but to the plasterboard surface. This rule number eight. Why is that? Because so it will be distributed evenly over the wall, the ceramics will lie flat. The ninth rule: the layer of glue should be as thin as possible, as the more you apply it, the more significant the load will be borne by the gypsum board base. This is highly undesirable. Glue is bred in small portions, since the time of its congealing is limited. It is strictly prohibited to add water to the drying compound! Remains of glue from under the tiles should be carefully squeezed out and cleaned with a damp rag. In case of need of trimming, it is best to use a tile cutter.

An important point!

Rule ten: when laying tiles on gypsum board all work is done intermittently. It is impossible to revet the entire wall at once. Have made five numbers - have a rest. Give gypsum cardboard "get used" to the load, adapt to new conditions! In addition, all work is carried out only using the level. Each tile should lie flat. Also it is not necessary to hurry up! Remember that fixing the flaws is rather problematic, since the glued tile can only be removed with a piece of gypsum board base. Complete the work by laying the last row.

Last step

The final stage is grouting joints. It is desirable to spend it after a certain time - at least a day. It is necessary to give the glue a good dry, and gypsum cardboard - get used to the load. As for the grout itself, the material must be bought with antibacterial fillers, which prevent mold from appearing on the seams.

Conclusion

We tried to answer in the most detailed manner the question of whether the tiles glue on plasterboard and how they do it. If you carefully follow all the recommendations presented in the review and carefully follow the step-by-step instructions, the procedure for finishing the ceramic tile gypsum board can be done quickly and efficiently.
