How much oil should be poured into the engine: instructions, recommendations

Lubricant replacement is one of the regular procedures required for operation. How much oil should be poured into the engine, which one to choose and what to do with it? Because of what most often the engine "eats" a lubricant and how to deal with it? We will try to answer these and some other questions in this article.

Engine oil

The main component of the lubricating fluid for the power unit is the oil base, which can be:

  • Mineral;
  • Semisynthetic;
  • Synthetic.

In addition to this characteristic, parameters such as viscosity (based on oil grades according to SAE) and additives (API or AGEA) are important.

Another important thing is the recommended engine oil offered by the car manufacturers. However, not all drivers pay attention to this. The main thing that is given importance is the basis, viscosity and favorite brand.

Oil Base

So, mineral liquids are obtained during the processing of petroleum, synthetic - by chemical synthesis, and semi-synthetic - by mixing mineral and synthetic.

Many prefer semisynthetic, considering it the best option for the ratio of "price-quality."

Viscosity index

Reducing the friction of motor parts is a task that is solved by the viscosity of the oil. Especially it concerns the pistons in the cylinder.

This parameter is classified according to SAE, which means the oil viscosity state at different temperatures. Thus, it means the minimum and maximum level within which the motor can operate efficiently and safely.

The letter between numbers, for example W, means winter, which in English is "winter". But in the name of the oil, it means all-weather, that is, the possibility of using it both in winter and in summer.

Additives

The additives classified by the API are of various types: API SJ, API CF-4, API SJ / CF-4. In this case, S means the type of liquid for the gasoline unit, and C for the diesel. Apparently, there are liquids separately for one and the other kind of motor, and also suitable for both.

Engine oil in winter

To make the engine easy to start in the winter, it is necessary to take into account some features. Most of the lubricating fluids used in Russia are all-seasoned. But experts agree that the recommended oil in the engine in cold weather should be special, as the conditions of operation in winter differ from summer ones.

In this case, a lot of parameters should be taken into account, such as the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer, engine power and wear, the year of production, the systematical nature and operation, and so on.

For example, if a car hibernates in a warm garage and is used only from time to time, it is unlikely that the owner should think about changing the oil for this period.

At the same time, if the motor is not in the best condition, then no expensive oil will save it. In this case, only repair is required.

But for modern cars that are in excellent condition, it is better not to save on oil. Then the motor will last longer and better.

How much oil must be poured into the engine

To accurately answer this question, you need to know the make and model of the car, since for each machine the volume may differ. Information can be extracted from the vehicle's operation manual, which contains data on the required quantity. Nevertheless, even having this information, in practice car owners often do not manage without difficulties.

How much oil should be poured into the engine? After all, the norm should be strictly defined.

If you take a domestic car, then for the volume of the engine from 1.8 to 2.5 liters will require three and a half liters of oil. Therefore, three liters are poured first, and then, after a few minutes, after checking the measurement, the remaining amount is added. At a small level, it is gradually added in small portions until the required level is reached.

For cars of foreign production, oils with the same engine capacity, as a rule, require more - from 4.2 to 4.4 liters. Fill it in the same way as when refueling domestic cars.

Lubricating fluid for VAZ

The oil in the VAZ engine, as mentioned above, is poured into an amount of three and a half liters. However, the nominal value is higher and is 3.7 liters. Thus it is necessary to pay attention to the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick, depending on what and to add the necessary quantity. When replacing, it is not possible to drain all the oil. Therefore, a smaller volume is required, which is indicated by the manufacturer.

Engine oil mileage

On average, for cars, the figure varies from fifteen to twenty-five thousand kilometers. However, in addition to the recommended mileage, you should also take into account such parameters as driving style, type and quality of fuel. If oil has been used for a long time, overheating should be avoided, because too high a temperature has a bad effect on it.

If the engine "eats" butter

If there is a constantly decreasing amount of oil in the engine, the cause may be hidden either in poor quality or in the emerging motor problems.

When the engine "eats" the oil, you can add it over and over again over a small portion. But in this way the problem is not solved, but only time is spent when full inspection and repair of the power unit is required. If such greedy consumption is not related to the quality of the lubricating fluid, the cause may be hidden in the combustion in the cylinders or leakage through a poor seal.

Combustion is easy to detect by observing the color of the exhaust gases. If they have a bluish tint, the problem lies in the oil-removal rings. Even if you muffle the engine and look at the presence or absence of a thick black coating, you can determine this fault. The solution in this case can be only one - a complete replacement of both oil-removal and compression rings.

But besides this, the cause of the malfunction can be, as already mentioned, various seals and gaskets. Usually, rubber seals lose their properties over time. In this case, oil flows normally at the junction between the crankcase and the cylinder block or the cylinder bank strip and timing cover.

The biggest expense is usually caused by damage to the crankshaft oil seals and camshaft. Then oil flows and you can see traces from it if the car has stood for a while in the parking lot.

It is best to immediately contact the technical center as soon as such problems are found. Then repair can do quite inexpensively. And in the event that the problem is launched, minor malfunctions will lead to more serious breakdowns, and then without significant financial investments, it will not be possible to manage.

But it can also happen that the oil was filled, which does not correspond to the viscosity recommended for a specific vehicle. As a result, even a very good engine oil becomes too fluid. Because of this, the necessary protection for cylinders is not ensured, and it itself starts to burn out.

Normal is the consumption of oil: for every fifteen to twenty thousand kilometers from one hundred to two hundred milliliters. If, however, with a given kilometer you have poured more fluid, you can talk about possible malfunctions of the motor.

Of course, too much lube fluid consumption is usually not associated with serious malfunctions. But you can not leave the problem without attention. Moreover, wear of the rings leads to loss of power during operation, and also affects fuel consumption.

Other causes of leakage of lubricant

In addition to those that are found most often and described above, there may be other reasons, when knowing how much oil should be poured into the engine in a normal way and ensuring this, you have to add it more and more:

  • The intake manifold control system was broken;
  • The engine fluid level sensor has lost its tightness;
  • The filter element is not sealed;
  • Too much oil is poured, because of which its working pressure increases - because of this, the load on the rings and the stuffing box, which can also become unusable, also increases;
  • Non-use of transport for a long period of time, when, due to downtime, sealing elements with gaskets can dry out;
  • Poor ventilation - if the gases are collected in the crankcase, the pressure in the system will be critical and will squeeze out the consumables.

So, now it is clear how much oil is needed in the engine when replacing and topping during normal operation. If more is required during its operation, this indicates the emerging problems that are best solved without waiting for the emergence of more global ones.
