How is the internal combustion engine adjusted?

The operation of each internal combustion engine is not possible without intake and exhaust valves. When these mechanisms are closed, compression of the fuel mixture takes place, which, in turn, drives the piston. Now many passenger cars are equipped with 16-valve engines. Each of the 16 valves has a small gap left between the mechanism stem and the camshaft cam .

This distance is necessary to ensure that the heated parts do not come into contact with each other when heated, and thus do not degrade the performance of the motor. The need for their customization arises every year, after about 40-45 thousand kilometers.

How to adjust the valves?

To begin with, you should wait until the engine has cooled down. Experts recommend that valves be adjusted only when the engine temperature is not above 38 degrees Celsius. To do this, it is enough to put the car in a garage with an air temperature of 20 degrees, and after 2 hours you can safely get down to work.

So, let's go directly to the question of how the valve is adjusted. After our engine has cooled down, remove the cover of the switch and unscrew the bolts securing the air filter. Next, remove the valve cover and take out the rubber washers. After that, the removed part is taken to the side (it is desirable to wrap it with polyethylene film so that road dust does not adhere to the walls) and put the car on a handbrake. Now you need to turn on 4th or 5th gear and put the jack under the front right wheel. If it's a car with an automatic box, we translate the gear lever into the "P" position. After that, we jack up our wheel and twist it until the jogger of the trembler goes to the position of the first cylinder in the BMT. After our shaft becomes in the position of the top dead center, we proceed to adjust the gap.

The valve is adjusted in the following sequence:

  • First, adjust the clearance of the mechanisms of the 1st cylinder.
  • After scrolling the runner of the trampler 90 degrees, the valve of the 3rd cylinder is adjusted.
  • Further the same thing we do with the 4th cylinder (the runner of the trambler at the same time we turn another 90 degrees).
  • Last set up the 2nd cylinder.

It should be noted that the actual adjustment of the valves (2106th VAZ including) is made as follows:

  • By means of a carabiner key on 11 millimeters we weaken a counternut.
  • Minus screwdriver and feeler adjust the gap (ideally should be 0.2 millimeter).
  • After we take a 0.2-mm probe and check the quality of the work. If everything is done correctly, the probe will penetrate into the gap with a little effort. Pay special attention to this. If the part will fly through the gap or, alternatively, get stuck between the cam and the stem - be aware that the valve adjustment was not done correctly.

  • After exhibiting the necessary clearance, we collect everything in place and start the motor. Adjusted parts must not generate any foreign sounds when the engine is running. If everything is normal, then the adjustment of VAZ valves was successful.
