Free Economic Society: goals and institution

In 1765, the Decree of Her Imperial Majesty Catherine II formed the oldest public organization - the Free Economic Society. It was independent of the Government, that's why it was called Free. The special position and the rights of the organization was confirmed by each successor of Catherine II at the accession to the throne. And even more so, quite often the Free Economic Society received impressive amounts from the treasury to realize its ideas.

The purpose of the Free Economic Society

At the source of the formation of the organization was a whole group of courtiers who represented the interests of liberal-minded nobles and scientists, led by MV Lomonosov. At that time these people advanced very revolutionary ideas:

  1. Development of monetary economy.
  2. The growth of industrial production.
  3. Abolition of serfdom.

True, Elizaveta Petrovna, who ruled at that time, did not support them. And only Catherine II allowed to start the implementation of the project and encouraged him in every possible way. The Free Economic Society openly declared the primacy of the interests of the state, which should develop, based on effective economic activity.

Beginning of work

And in the distant 1765, at last, the Charter of the organization was adopted . The establishment of the Free Economic Society contributed to the solution of the tasks of "cultivating the people's well-being in the state by bringing the economy to a better state". The first step was to hold a contest among 160 specialists representing different states. The main topic was the distribution of the right to land owners to bring maximum benefit to their country.

The main merits of IVEO before the Empire

The creation of the Free Economic Society was of great importance for the state. Among the merits of the organization both before the reigning dynasty, and before the people of the country, it should be noted:

  1. Initiation of the abolition of serfdom.
  2. Universal primary education.
  3. Commencement of work of statistical committees.
  4. The laying of the first cheese factories.
  5. Dissemination and popularization of new species and varieties of various cultivated plants (in particular, potatoes and others).

Publishing and educational activities

Their efforts to intensify agricultural production, increase the industrial power of the state and many other topics, members of the organization tried to convey to the widest possible masses of the population. The Free Economic Society of Russia published both monographs and periodicals. The library of the organization consisted of almost two hundred thousand monographs, and in the collection of zemstvo publications there were more than forty thousand copies of brochures and books. At various times, the members of the Society were such prominent thinkers of the Russian Empire as IF Krusenstern, AM Butlerov, GR Derzhavin, DI Mendeleyev, NV Vereshchagin, PP Semenov-Tyan Shansky, VV Dokuchaev, A. and L. Contribution to the defense of the country

In its structure in Moscow was created a special unit for the needs of the troops - Voentorg. His task was to provide officers who took direct part in the fighting, various goods at reduced prices.

Collapse and rebirth

The activities of the IEE structures were greatly undermined by the world war and subsequent revolutions. And after the events of 1917, the organization of economists of Russia ceased to exist. The work was resumed only after many years. In the seventies of the last century the restoration of a public association of leading economists began. At that time, there was again a need to improve the economic activities of the state. It was then that economists organized their own organization - NEO. The newly formed Community carried out work throughout the country. Already in the late eighties there was a transformation of NEO. It became known as the "All-Union Economic Community".

Thousands of scientists and specialists work in this organization.
