'Elokom' ointment - a description of the drug

At the heart of the drug "Elokom" is used mometasone furoate - a potent SCS, characterized by anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effect. Mometasone furoate is a potent inhibitor produced by three cytokines that participate in the development and reinforcement of the inflammatory process. Salicylic acid, which is part of the ointment, helps exfoliate the stratum corneum and penetrate the mometasone furoate inside the skin.

The degree of absorption and development of systemic effects depends on a number of factors, including localization and range of damage, the state of the epidermis, the period of treatment, and the use of an occlusive dressing. After a one-time local application of Elokom ointment for 12 hours, about 1.5% of the dose received is absorbed. The drug, which enters the systemic bloodstream, is excreted with urine and feces without problems.

Indication for use is the elimination of manifestations of inflammation and hyperkeratosis, as in the case of psoriasis and chronic eczema. Apply "Elokom" ointment with a thin layer on the affected area of the skin in the morning and in the evening. The maximum dose is 15 g. The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the severity and course of the disease.

As with local corticosteroids, due care should be taken when applying ointment to large areas or with predictable long-term treatment. This is important in the treatment of children, due to the fact that children are more susceptible to oppression of the hypothalamic-adrenal system under the influence of local GCS, rather than adults. "Elokom" ointment is not recommended to apply on the face or in the area of axillary hollows and groin. Avoid contact with ointments with open wounds and mucous membranes. "Elokom" should not be used for ulcerative lesions of the skin and striae, as well as droplet or pustular forms of psoriasis. "Elokom" is a hormonal drug, so you have to be careful when using it for a long time.

In case of skin irritation, including drying out of the skin, you should moderate the use of the ointment and choose another method of treatment for the patient. If the infection develops, a suitable antifungal agent should be used. If the positive result in the treatment of infection is not achieved, the use of the Elokom ointment should be discontinued until the infection is eliminated. Contraindications are increased sensitivity to furoate mometasone, salicylic acid or to another component of the drug.

Like all topical SCS, "Elokom" ointment is not recommended for bacterial, viral, as well as parasitic skin diseases, provided there is no concomitant therapy. "Elokom" is also prohibited in cases of perioral dermatitis or rosacea, post-vaccination reactions.

When applied within the recommended doses of "Elokom" ointment is tolerated by patients without side effects. Sometimes there may be mild or mild burning in the area of ointment application, itching; Cases of atrophy of the skin of mild to moderate degree or flaking were rarely recorded. If the local GCS is used, side effects such as irritability, allergic contact dermitis, skin maceration, folliculitis, striae, sweating, acne, dry skin, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, hypertrichosis may be present.

"Elokom" is shown exclusively for external use and is not shown in ophthalmology. Other GCSs affect the action of salicylic acid, so it is recommended that this be taken into account when prescribing "Elocom" in combination with other agents. Ointment "Elokom", reviews about which in the majority are positive, are recommended by many dermatologists.
