Decorative overlays on the door - an alternative replacement

The lining on the front door serves for decorative finishing of its surface. Various variants of textural execution, a variety of colors and shades allow even the most demanding owner to choose an option for himself.

Metal doors, as a rule, decorate with overlays. This is a simple and convenient way to give the finished product a presentable appearance and at the same time close all the irregularities and flaws that have arisen in the manufacturing process.

Pad from MDF boards are considered the best option for finishing the door leaf. This material consists of wood fibers, suitably processed and pressed to the required density. The processing of the external surface with a laminate of different texture and shade or veneer of valuable rocks creates a resemblance to natural material.

The solid wood can also be used as an overlay on the door. The price of such finishing will be higher, but the impression at the entrance to the dwelling from the appearance will accordingly change.

Versions

Now it is possible to purchase ready-made overlays for doors made according to standard designs, or to order their manufacture in specialized workshops.

The owners, who have the opportunity and the tool, can individually make a decorative panel to their taste from a solid MDF board. It is cut in accordance with the idea and is machined on a milling machine. Blanks are finished in various ways: painted, covered with varnish or PVC film.

The option of panels, decorated with hand carving, will cost an order of magnitude more expensive. For such a finish, thicker pads are chosen so that the three-dimensional thread looks all the best.

An even more refined version of the finish will be the installation of a double glazing unit with a protective openwork grille. However, this work involves the removal of doors from the hinges.

Installation

Fastening of standard door lining does not require special equipment. This process can be carried out and with own hand, however it is better to address to professionals.

If it is possible to remove the doors from the hinges and lay them in order to install the pads in a horizontal position, the work can be done faster and better. In this case, the patch panels can be fixed with liquid nails. Before they are applied, the surface is peeled off from the peeling coating and degreased.

In the horizontal position, the lining on the door is fixed with screws. To mount the inner panel along the perimeter of the door leaf through its entire thickness holes are drilled with the formation of a secret recess under the hat of the screw. Its length is calculated in such a way that there is no exit of the point to the front surface.

The outer lining on the metal door is attached to the rim for short screws. Their hats are usually closed with a rubber sealing gasket, which protects from drafts. For the reliability of self-tapping connections, you can duplicate with liquid nails.

Care

Decorative overlay on the front door, lined with PVC film, does not need special care. Its surface has dirt-repellent properties.

If necessary, the linings can be cleaned with a neutral detergent that does not contain abrasive and chlorine. For washing use flannel or other soft material. Fat stains are removed with a mild soap solution.

It is forbidden to use gasoline, alcohol, acetone and other types of solvents, as well as materials impregnated with these substances. If possible, use special care products for the appropriate type of coating.

They not only clean the contaminants well and protect them from the effects of corrosive media, but also have additives that make up the fragrances and gloss additives.

Overhead fittings

Using decorative MDF panels for finishing, it is necessary to be prepared for the fact that handles, viewing eyes and, possibly, locks have to be changed.

Lining on the door, especially massive carved, have a significant thickness. If they are installed on both sides, the total thickness of the door leaf will increase significantly. Standard hardware, as a rule, in this case is not suitable, it needs to be changed, or replacement of fasteners of other size is required.

Picking up new handles, you should pay attention to the quality of the material and the compatibility of colors and shades. The chrome lining on the door is well protected against corrosion and, as a rule, suitable for most surfaces. Doors with such fittings look rich and aesthetic, emphasizing the style.
