Cocktails "Old Fashion": history, recipe

The name "Old Fashion" came to us, no doubt, from English. Literally it is translated as "old style", "old-fashioned". And if in any other sphere this epithet could be considered insulting, then for the cocktail its meaning is more similar to the definitions of "primordial" and "pristine". Cocktails "Old Fashion" really appeared for a long time.

Appearance

It is officially confirmed that the history of the drink began over 130 years ago - in 1880. For the first time, "Old Fashion" cocktails began to be prepared at the Louisville bar Pendennis Club (Kentucky). Unfortunately, the author's name has not been preserved, but it is known that the barman made this drink for his regular client - a colonel in retired James Pappera. In retirement, the colonel established the production of bourbon, and soon became one of its largest producers in the US.

Pupper liked cocktail very much. He asked the bartender for his recipe and subsequently shared it with another bartender from the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. The new drink took its rightful place in the bar of a well-known hotel, so the cocktails "Old Fashion" became very popular very quickly. Over time, it spread throughout America.

Rays of Glory

It is known that the cocktail "Old Fashion", the recipe of which has not changed for years, was the favorite aperitif of Harry Truman, the 33rd president of the United States. Not indifferent to this drink was the then first lady - the wife of President Bess. Eyewitnesses testified that the Truman couple cooked it with their own hands, and quite often. Today, cocktails "Old Fashion" take a worthy place in the official list of cocktails of the International Bartenders Association.

Composition and proportions

The cocktail consists of:

  • Bourbon - 50 ml;
  • Herbal tincture (angostura) - 5 ml;
  • Orange peel - 1 piece;
  • Sugar-refined sugar - 2 slices;
  • Cocktail cherry - 1 berry;
  • Ice in cubes - 200 grams.

Optionally added soda. Its presence is not necessary, but it may appeal to those who like Old Fashion cocktails seem too strong.

Homemade Cooking

In various variations, bourbon can be replaced with more affordable beverages: whiskey, cognac, brandy. It happens that it is not easy to get angostura, so instead of it often use liqueurs "Cointreau" or "Jägermeister". They are more common and not so expensive. Soda is usually replaced with a simple mineral water with gas.

Preparation

In a cooled low glass add refined sugar and moisten it with herbal tincture. When the sugar is impregnated, mash it with a spoon or a special maddler. Fill the glass to the top with ice cubes. We pour in the necessary amount of bourbon, we blend it. We decorate with cherry and zest.

This cocktail is usually served as an aperitif. If desired, it can be slightly diluted with mineral water to lower the degree.
