Cities, villages, territory and population of the Stavropol Territory

The Stavropol Territory, once part of the Southern Federal District (SFD), since 2010 has been part of the North Caucasian administrative unit, separated from the South Federal District, along with Dagestan, Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkess republics. The capital of the NCFD was chosen Pyatigorsk - a resort town in the Caucasus Mineral Waters region. This is the only district in Russia, the center of which is appointed not an administrative entity or even the largest city, because the regional center remains Stavropol.

This year the capital will be only 239 years old. The territory and population of the Stavropol Territory are small figures that will be indicated in the article. Also, it will be about the cities and settlements of the region.

Briefly about the founding of the city

Stavropol, translated from Greek, sounds like "the city of the cross." It was founded in 1777, and often these three sevens are called keeper of the region. Until the year 35 of the last century, it was called the Stavropol-Caucasus, from 1935 to 1943 - Voroshilovsk, and only in 1943 returned the original, but already shortened name.

The territory of the region was inhabited by peoples even during the Eneolithic period, as evidenced by the settlements found during the archaeological excavations. A Tatar fort, which is a unique property of the planet and located almost in the city, between the village of Tatarka and Stavropol, was once the center of the region and a fairly large medieval settlement.

There was a settlement as a result of the completion of the Russo-Turkish war. Then, after the signing of the peace treaty, there was a need to protect the territory. For this reason, they began to build a fortress - the Azov-Mozdoks line. The beginning of the construction of a powerful outpost dates back to 1777, hence the beginning of the development of the city of Stavropol and the entire region.

The main attraction, which is the place of the foundation of the regional center is the Fortress wall. This is a fragment of Cossack barracks, which has survived since the erection of the fortress.
