Autobiography at the time of hiring. Why is it needed?

Applicants are satisfied with various tests when hiring. How do successful large companies choose candidates for a particular position? All other information is added to the letter only at will. There are no strict rules and canons of style. The narrative should be narrative, written in the first person.
