Australian Shepherd: Shepherd from God

Contrary to popular belief, the Australian Shepherd is not raised in Australia, and not even in New Zealand, but in the United States. The name of this breed is due to its own ancestors, Basque sheep dogs brought to America from Australia. The complaisance and cheerful disposition of these dogs conquers the hearts of people from the first minutes of communication, not to mention the sheer shepherd qualities inherent in this dog. Thus, the Australian Shepherd has become a clear example of a combination of excellent business and personal qualities: loyal and loyal friends of the family, they are also excellent helpers in the pasture. The comparatively small size does not prevent these animals from being managed even with very large herds of both sheep and bulls.

Australian Shepherd: Standard

The ratio of length and width of the skull is approximately 1 to 1, the transition from muzzle to forehead, though not sharp, but still noticeable, is not smooth. The eyes are almond-shaped, blue and brown (of any shade) color are allowed. The ears are semistable, small, set high. Full standing, as well as drooping ears, is unacceptable. The tail is usually stubby from birth, a length exceeding 10 cm, requires cupping. The Australian Shepherd seems to have been born to run - her legs are strong and muscular. The coat should be of medium length, its straight or wavy version is allowed. There is also a mane, trousers and a so-called toad. Marble (red or black) and black color allow the presence of white marks, located not farther than the withers. Mask in the form of glasses on the muzzle is a must, even if it already has a white protochina. The permissible weight for these dogs is 20-25 kg, height - 51-58 cm (males) and 46-53 cm (females).

Features of behavior of the breed "Australian Shepherd"

Kennel, or rather, breeders, who can buy a representative of this wonderful breed, will be happy to talk about how to properly maintain such sheep dogs. Frequent combing is, perhaps, the only difficulty that the owners of these dogs have to face. The Australian Shepherd is well trained, but requires a softer attitude. Strictness and drill are not the best tactics for training these dogs. Being shepherds by nature, they need only a certain direction and constant encouragement. Diseases of the kidneys and eyes - the main scourge, which affected the representatives of this breed, these organs must be watched in the first place. The diet of Australians is not specific, the main thing is the balance and the regime (it is best to teach the dog to eat at the same time). Also, we should not forget that the representatives of this breed because of their long hair do not tolerate heat, so when walking it, make sure that there are enough places on the walking route where the dog could take shelter from the heat. By the way, long walks are a must. These dogs must receive daily exercise, therefore the Australian Shepherd is a good companion of runners and cyclists.
