A bottle of wine. History of capacity and features of its forms

A bottle of wine in our time is not particularly surprising. This drink learned to produce a very long time, back in antiquity. But this kind of capacity as a bottle, in which it is poured today, appeared quite recently. Depending on the type of wine and the place of its production, it can have different shapes and volumes. Its modern look is a long way to perfection. The wine bottle has its own, very interesting history.

Glass containers have become widely used for bottling a heady drink relatively recently. When people learned to make wine, they used completely different containers for storing wine. For example, Egypt used amphorae (clay vessels). Then mankind studied the techniques of making glass. People realized that it perfectly preserves all the tastes. But a bottle of standard-size wine appeared only at the beginning of the 19th century. The best volume for such a liquid is a capacity of 700 to 800 milliliters. But there are even more impressive bottles, the volume of which is 2.3 liters. Gradually winemakers of many countries have accepted the standard of 750 milliliters, which facilitated the trade in this commodity.

A bottle of wine has a certain color. Usually this is a green, brown or light glass. The color may indicate that you belong to a certain region. So, in Germany Mozel wines are bottled in green bottles, Rhine - in brown, etc.

The configuration of the bottle is also of great importance. For many years it was found that the cylindrical shape is the most optimal. Firstly, in this form it is convenient to transport it. Secondly, this capacity allows to improve the storage conditions for wine. It is stored in a horizontal position in the cellars, where it ripens. Cylindrical shape and this way of storage allow the natural plug to remain always wet and prevent air from entering the bottle. In addition, the contact of wine with a cork gives it a certain taste.

Sometimes the shape that a bottle of wine has, indicates the origin and quality of its contents. The classics include a Burgundy bottle. This is an elongated container with sloping sides. This form is used by many wine producers in Europe. The Burgundian bottle is bottled with "Chardonnay", "Beaujolais", "Chablis" and other drinks.

Classical Bordeaux wine bottles are narrow, high capacity. Usually, for red wine use green glass, and for white - light. In this container bottled wine "Bordeaux" and certain types of drinks from the grapes Cabernet Sauvignon.

Some manufacturers took this form for bottling French, Italian and Spanish dry wines.

In Germany and Alsace they use a Rhine bottle of elongated shape. The Provencal form resembles the amphora, the Frankish form is a jar.

Some German wines are bottled in the form of a triangle. For champagne use a container of very thick glass.

A bottle of wine (more precisely its form), is of great importance for assessing the quality of the content. Many experts can give a drink a characteristic only by the appearance of the container.

The shape of the bottle, the color of the glass is not only information about wine. These indicators have aesthetic value. And this is a certain brand, which is significant for many connoisseurs of good wine.
