RelationsDivorce

Why is the probability of divorce increases after a joint holiday?

Family holidays can be a very busy time, considering how much time you need to spend on finding good hotels and flights. Unfortunately, the statistics also agree that such periods of supposed rest put too much pressure on the relationship. A recent study showed that an increase in the number of divorces is closely related to seasonal holidays.

In general, from March to August, you can see the highest rates of divorce. This prompted researchers to think that the situation may be the result of a summer vacation. At this time, many couples are trying to fix their relationship by going on vacation together. The researchers noted that it takes from two to three months to find lawyers, file documents, organize finances, and even just decide on it.

Features of the study

In fact, the research of American scientists began with the fact that they wanted to find out how the crisis affects the level of divorce. Nevertheless, they began to notice that the pattern of seasonal divorce persists regardless of other factors that they studied, for example, the unemployment rate and the housing market. These data were repeated year after year, not only in America, where the study was conducted, but also in other countries of the world.

Scientists analyzed the data for Ohio, Minnesota, Florida and Arizona and found exactly the same trend. Moreover, in these states the trends were more acute, as in Ohio the unemployment rate was above the average after the recession, and Florida and Arizona suffered from the collapse of the real estate market.

Why does such a trend exist?

Trying to explain this trend, the lead author of the study, Professor Julia Rassol, said that, as a rule, on holidays and during holidays, the family has growing expectations related to its relations, even if in the past years, partners have faced disappointment.

Leave is a period in the year that causes admiration and the opportunity for a new beginning. Thus, it is perceived as a transition to a new stage of relations. In a sense, it's like a cycle of optimism. These are very symbolically charged moments of time for a couple.

Unfortunately, if these moments did not meet expectations or did not help to fix the problems in the marriage, the couple begin a divorce process.

Is everything to blame for the holiday?

Of course, the reasons for divorce are multifaceted and complex, since each relationship is unique. This study does not suggest that it was holidays and holidays that became the reasons for the divorce, they rather showed current problems. Therefore, they are associated with a sharp increase in the number of divorces from March to August.
