Where do epic phrases come from?

The image of the Russian language is largely determined by the large number of all kinds of winged expressions that give speech a special flavor. We so often use all sorts of epic phrases that we can not even think about where they came from. Of course, intuitive understanding of the meaning of the regular joke is not given to everyone, so some wits insert such expressions out of place, but for an inquisitive mind it will always be interesting to get to the true meaning.

How to measure the epic of a phrase?

What is the difference between winged expressions, proverbs, sayings, jokes and epic phrases? By and large - these are synonyms, only these definitions refer to different sources and different times. Proverbs, sayings and jokes, probably were once spoken by someone surprisingly on time, passed from mouth to mouth and went to the people. After the widespread dissemination of writing, the authors ceased to be obscure, because what is written is a pen, an ax can not be corrected. Thus appeared winged expressions. Finally, the last interpretation sometimes makes you think: are the words that you are going to use are epic enough?

What is epic? According to the explanatory dictionaries in modern Russian this word has a distinct slang shade, and it means literally "something amazing, admirable, strong emotions". An event can be epic, a canvas, almost anything. If a phrase evokes strong emotions or can concisely convey a deep meaning, then it is certainly epic.

Where do epic phrases come from?

It is possible to conditionally divide capacious expressions into two categories: known to a narrow or wide circle. The first category arises spontaneously and is very close to popular jokes. Practically untranslatable short phrases can be the result of an amusing reservation, an absurd argument from a dispute, an incorrectly understood expression. These phrases can be pretty sticky and wander from person to person according to the unwritten laws of oral folk art.

A good example is the "compound mouse". This strange definition is found in people who have no idea about compound machines, and this phrase in a literal reading is absolutely untranslatable. However, in a figurative sense, means someone quiet, inexpressive and timid.

For a wide range of connoisseurs, there are more certain sources. This cinema, literature, including poetry and songs, and recently - computer games.

Cinematography as an inexhaustible source

Many famous phrases that can claim to be epic, are remembered precisely thanks to the films. Of course, to claim the title of the primary source can be books on which these films were shot, but the motion picture can be created only on motives of a literary work. In addition, do not discount the powerful effect of charisma actor.

"Maybe you still have the key to the apartment, where the money is?" - this phrase Ostap Bender was doubly epic when she was pronounced by Andrei Mironov. Sharp and biting phrases from films can really be epic, and they are not forgotten with age. Gleb Zheglov's expression "The thief must sit in prison" only sounds in Vladimir Vysotsky's indescribable voice.

Literary sources

Connoisseurs believe that screening can only spoil the book, and it can be difficult to disagree with them. There are such books, to which the filmmakers approached with apprehension and caution, fearing not to reach the level. For example, there are several adaptations of "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov, as well as several films based on the motives, but they did not convey the powerful energy of the novel. That's where the epoch rises, because the novel is quoted constantly, from "the manuscript does not burn" to "aye da cream".

If the phrases from the films convey the charisma of the actors, then the literary source awakens the imagination. That is why expressions from books or poems can be painted with their own emotional shades, endowing with a different degree of epic. Irony and sarcasm here occupy leading positions, and the phrase "Was there a boy?" From the novel "The Life of Klim Samgin" has long changed color. If in the book it was philosophical, now it is used exclusively in an ironic key.

Epic phrases from games

A relatively new source, from which you can draw an unimaginable number of expressions. Alas, they will not be understood by everyone, but some of them are so epic that they have the right to wide distribution. Godville is almost entirely composed of expressions of varying degrees of wingedness, and it is incredibly difficult to choose from them, let it be "Death is a protective reaction of the body to an unhealthy lifestyle." If you learn how to pronounce it to the place, the effect is guaranteed.

Many short phrases that migrated from games to the real world, in the original are quite extensive. The mocking expression "The Arrow fell into the knee" comes from "Skyrim", and in the original it sounds like "Once upon a time I was as adventurous as you, but then I got an arrow in the knee".

Oblivion gave us the exclamation "Stop, where you are, criminal offspring!". One of the freshest phrases that flew around the Internet and quickly gained popularity - "Forward, Roach!" Or "Move, Roach!". Accidentally or intentionally, the developers of the game "The Witcher" allocated this word to these words, but the players had nothing else to do but create a new meme.

Appropriateness of use

In most cases, epic phrases are used in colloquial speech to express words expressively, and in literary phrases to create a capacious image. With such expressions it is easy to overdo it, but in some cases, especially if you subtly feel the mood of the interlocutor, you can create complex constructions from epic phrases and even conduct a meaningful dialogue on them.

In business communication, political speeches and official documentation, it is better to avoid any epic, pathetic or winged phrases. They too easily change the meaning of what has been said, and if you tear out the right sentence from the context, they can damage the image. Otherwise, especially if it gives you pleasure, you can not deny yourself and continue to use good phrases for imaginative speech.
