When is intrauterine insemination used?

According to statistics, every fifth married couple can not have children. And in almost half of such cases, doctors can not establish the reason why there is no natural conception. In this situation, intrauterine insemination will be the best option for conceiving a child.

What is it

Intrauterine insemination is artificial insemination, which consists in the introduction of processed and purified sperm into the uterine cavity. This procedure is performed during ovulation.

Kinds

Intrauterine insemination is divided into 2 types. Which exactly will fit a particular pair, will become known only after the spermogram of the spouse. If the result of this analysis shows that the number of viable spermatozoa is small, then intrauterine insemination with sperm of the husband is used. It is also performed in the absence of a spouse ejaculation or in the presence of impotence.

If the result of the analysis shows that the husband has genetic problems or there are no spermatozoa, intrauterine insemination with donor sperm is performed .

Stages of insemination

  1. At the first stage, the woman's body is prepared - ultrasound monitoring is performed, which shows the process of follicle growth and the maturation of the egg by stimulating the ovaries with medications that in one way or another affect their function.
  2. Further, the introduction of prepared and purified sperm into the uterus is carried out.

Also, intrauterine insemination can be performed in a natural cycle, ie without the process of stimulating the maturation of the ovaries, but then the probability of successful fertilization decreases many times.

This procedure is carried out in just 2-3 minutes and is absolutely painless. Since it is performed with a special catheter, the diameter of which is unimpeded through the cervical canal. After the insemination, the woman should lie for at least 30 minutes.

Pros of insemination

  • Control of ovulation ensures that the egg and sperm meet at the best possible time for fertilization.
  • During sexual intercourse, the main part of the spermatozoids lingers and dies in the cervical mucus. Intrauterine insemination simply avoids this.
  • Before the introduction of sperm into the cervical canal, it is treated, and this improves its quality and, accordingly, increases the chances of pregnancy.

Contraindications

  • Pathologies of development of the uterus, which can disrupt the normal gestation of pregnancy.
  • Mental diseases of women, in which pregnancy is contraindicated.
  • Inflammatory diseases or cancer of the pelvic organs.
  • Swelling of the ovary.

As a rule, after 3-4 unsuccessful attempts of insemination, doctors offer to conduct in vitro fertilization. The thing is that in almost 90% of cases, pregnancy should occur in the first 3 attempts. Since with each subsequent insemination the probability of pregnancy is reduced to almost zero.
