When do you celebrate International Literacy Day?

The civilized world fights for the equality and well-being of people, the purity of nature, the preservation of the entire diversity of the animal and plant world of the Earth. To attract public attention to difficulties, special world holidays are being established. Their initiators are the UN, international associations, organizations, institutions. The article will tell you what the International Literacy Day is.

The concept of literacy

The word "literacy" has Greek roots and literally means "reading and writing." The dictionary defines the literacy of a person as the ability to write without errors, to read fluently and correctly express their thoughts in a conversation. All these skills allow you to master new knowledge, improve, bring benefits to society.

Relevance of the problem

Why did I need International Literacy Day? States struggling with ignorance of their own citizens, everywhere introduce educational programs. People themselves understand how important education is, because it helps to find a place in life, therefore they independently master the sciences.

Nevertheless, today there are more than seven hundred million illiterate and completely illiterate people in the world. There are also those who have never seen a book. Among them more than seventy million children. This problem is especially urgent in the countries of the third world with a low level of economic development, where wars are going on and civil unrest is taking place.

If there is no such problem in Europe, the Russian Federation and the United States, then in Africa, some countries in Asia, Latin America, the majority of the population is completely illiterate, there is not even universal access to primary education, there is discrimination based on gender, when girls and women are removed From training.

All this served as a prerequisite for the establishment of the International Literacy Day.

Brief history of the holiday

September 8, 1965 in Tehran, the capital of Iran, held a World Conference, which brought together ministers of education from around the world. The theme of the conference was the elimination of illiteracy in the world, raising the total level of education. Methods and measures were discussed to achieve the set goals. One of the most important recognized are those that are focused on children and adolescents. It is recommended to hold the International Literacy Day in school - in elementary and senior classes. The child must learn that it is useful and prestigious to be literate, that science opens the door to a bright future, there is an incentive to learn new knowledge.

The day of the conference - September 8 - is approved as the World Day for the Elimination of Illiteracy.

The United Nations General Assembly from 2003 to 2013 was declared the Decade of Literacy. During this period, worldwide conferences were held on a variety of topics: Literacy and Health, Literacy and Peace, Literacy for Women, and others.

When marked

International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on September 8. In 1966 it was approved by UNESCO. The holiday has got accustomed, and in 2015 celebrated the fiftieth, anniversary International day of literacy.

In the Russian calendar, this day is not marked in red, but the importance of it is understood by all educated people, that's why it is celebrated in educational institutions of all levels - pre-school, school, secondary and higher, promoted in offices and scientific institutions.

In order to make the events accessible to the whole population, the International Literacy Day is held in the library, the houses of creativity, the foyer of cinemas and other public places.

Traditions

Not only in Russia, but also in Kazakhstan, and in Ukraine, such events have already become traditional for the International Literacy Day, like olympiads, various contests and quizzes, open lessons whose main goal is to highlight the most literate and diligent students and students. Lecturers deliver presentations and reports highlighting the problems of illiteracy, the consequences of this phenomenon and ways to overcome it. The population is distributed leaflets with calls to develop independently. Awarding of outstanding teachers is held everywhere.

How to become literate

There are such good proverbs: "It's always good to learn," "Who is in science, it's not lost," "They write not with a pen, but with the mind." They reflect the popular opinion about the importance of acquiring new knowledge.

To achieve good results on this path, it is important:

  • Many read good literature. Not necessarily scientific, even if it's an adventure, a fantasy or a detective, it's important that their quality is high. Therefore, it is best to read the classics of the genre.
  • Often look in the dictionary to learn the meaning of new words.
  • Try to clear your speech of slang, and even more so from profanity.
  • Do not be offended if someone corrects the mistakes of your speech or letters.
  • Solve crosswords and puzzles. This will not increase literacy, but ultimately contribute to the development of intelligence and memory.
