What sea in Marmaris - Mediterranean or Aegean? Marmaris - the fusion of two seas. Holidays in Marmaris

The coast of Turkey on the Mediterranean Sea has long been one of the favorite vacation spots for Russians. Especially popular among our compatriots is Antalya with its hotels operating on the All Inclusive system. However, do not forget that this country is washed by the waters of the Marble, Black and Aegean seas. Due to this circumstance in Turkey there are resorts where the merging of two seas occurs. Marmaris, which is one of them, was relatively recently adopted by the Russians. This article is devoted to the peculiarities of rest at the confluence of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas.

About Sultan Suleiman and the hapless builder

Marmaris appeared on the map of the Ottoman Empire in 1522. The name of the city is associated with the name of Sultan Suleiman, who, according to legend, ordered the hang of the architect who built there an unsightly fortress, exclaiming: "Mimar ace". However, the version that it originated from the Greek word, which translates as "Shining", deserves more confidence.

For the sake of justice, it should be noted that the city on the shore of the bay near the confluence of the Mediterranean and the Aegean Seas, which was called Fiskos, appeared at a time when no one had ever heard of the Turks. Already by the 11th century BC. E. He led intensive maritime trade with the countries of the Mediterranean. Later, Fiskos owned Persians, Romans and Byzantines. Only at the end of the 14th century it was captured and plundered by the Turks, who, however, needed for its final annexation to their empire for another three decades.

A new impetus to the development of Marmaris gave the construction of a fortress in the 16th century. The appearance of this defensive structure made trade safer, which led to the economic prosperity of the city.

In 1789, in the bay of Marmaris, the English fleet, led by Lord Nelson, stopped. The next century and a half, nothing special happened in the city.

Modern History

In 1957, Marmaris was badly damaged by the earthquake. Strangely enough, this tragic event gave impetus to the development of the city. In particular, when it began to rebuild anew, on the map of Marmaris appeared wide avenues, the embankment and modern infrastructure. However, the transformation of these places into a modern resort began in the 80's, when there appeared a lot of hotels and entertainment. Thanks to an intensive advertising campaign conducted outside of Turkey, tourists from Western Europe began to come there, and in 2000 there was an increasing frequency of Russian speech.
