The remarkable city of Elabuga, whose sights will be considered here, originated in 1780. It is one of the most ancient Tatar settlements in Russia. The city stands on the right bank of the Kama River, in the place where the Toima River flows into it. All of it - like a museum in the open air. Ancient churches, stone mansions of the XIX century, monuments - everything speaks of its rich history.

Yelabuga in ancient times

The discovery of Ananyinsky burial ground near this city, dating from the VIII-V centuries. BC. E., And studies of Elabuga hill fort and adjacent territories, allowed scientists to conclude that this settlement arose at the turn of the X-XI centuries. The mysterious tower of "Devil's fortress" is a witness of medieval events. Once there was a ferry across the river Kama. And it is also known that near the settlement in the 12th century a white-stone mosque with eight towers was erected, similar to the architectural structures in Bulgaria. Now on this place only the remains of ruins are seen. This is the only building of the pre-Mongol era, preserved until our time. Archaeologists have found out that in the 9th-10th century AD, E. By this time, one can also relate the foundation of the village of Trysoksvyatsky in this place. But in the XIX century here flourished industry. And by the beginning of the 20th century Elabuga already had more than 10 000 inhabitants. There were a lot of merchants here, among which 12 were millionaires. A well-known dynasty of traders of the Staheevs supplied bread not only to the regions of Russia, but also to the countries of Europe. Local entrepreneurs Ushkovy founded the first chemical plants in the Prikamye, which in terms of production were the largest and most profitable enterprises of this kind in what was then Russia.

"Devil's Castle"

What is Yelabuga famous for? Its sights are so diverse that it will not last a whole day to visit them all. The symbol of the city is the tower of the "Devil's fort". This unique monument of history was once a tribal settlement of one of the local tribes. In the 10th century a Bulgarian fortification was built here. Now most of the building is destroyed. The only preserved tower is the stone tower, which is a stone hollow structure of cylindrical shape, covered with a metal domed roof. It is worth noting that in this form, this ancient relic reached us thanks to the efforts of merchant IV Shishkin, who in 1867, at his own expense, organized the restoration of the building on the old foundation and covering it with iron. The original masonry, consisting of rough stones, was preserved only on the north side.

Religious buildings

The largest temple of Elabuga is the Cathedral of the Savior, which was consecrated in 1821. In the mural of this magnificent structure participated well-known academic artists: the brothers Vereshchagin, IA Osokin, Bruni. The five-domed building with a five-tier bell tower was created in the spirit of classicism. Once, before the 1917 revolution, the cathedral had a rich decoration, amazing visitors with a large number of gold and silver ornaments and precious salaries. The main shrine of the temple is a man-made image of Christ the Savior.

Another worth noting is the Intercession Cathedral, built in the style of Empire and Baroque with elements of classicism. The time of its creation is also in the XIX century. On the territory of the city there is also a working female Elabuga Kazan-Bogoroditsky monastery, founded in 1856.

Another place that is worth a visit, being in Elabuga, is the St. Nicholas Church. Its wooden "ancestor" existed in the XVII century. In the next century, the building found stone walls. Subsequently, the church was rebuilt with the funds of parishioners. Thanks to donations, the church had a rich decoration. The main shrines of the temple are the icons of the Wonderworker Nicholas and the Savior, the Holy Chalice, found near Mamadysh in the first half of the 18th century. The very first church of Elabuga is Pokrovskaya, built by the decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. In 1813 it was rebuilt in stone. Later it was restored.

Jamig Mosque

Separately it is necessary to tell about the next sight of the city. The cathedral mosque Jamig was built here in 1992-1999 according to the project of the architect F. Sh. Galiev. This is a modern structure. To create it, the highest point of the city was chosen. The mosque is richly decorated. Its ceiling is crowned by a huge glass chandelier weighing 500 kg, made at the Saratov glass factory. The floor is covered with 27 carpets of emerald color, brought from Tajikistan. The height of the minaret is 57 meters. Every day dozens of Muslims rush here for the creation of prayer.

Shishkinsky ponds are located in the park, dedicated to the millennial history of the city. This picturesque place is located right in front of the "Devil's Town". Beautiful apple alleys, flower beds everywhere, decorative benches and a lookout pyramidal platform with a bright tent on top - all these are the corners of the square "1000 anniversary of Yelabuga".

Monuments of nature

Where else should we visit when we are in Yelabuga? There are two unique natural monuments: Krasnaya Gorka and the Holy Key. The first of these is due to the red color of the cliffs of the high bank of the Kama River. This is an amazing place once depicted by the famous artist I. Shishkin in his painting "Krasnaya Gorka near Yelabuga." Looking at the water spring, called the Holy Key, you involuntarily recall another work by the same master called "Saint Key near Yelabuga". The monument is dedicated to St. Panteleimon, whom all Orthodox Christians pray for getting rid of diseases.

Thus, we went in absentia in the beautiful ancient city of Elabuga and studied its many sights. The Pokrovskaya church, the modern Jamig mosque, monuments, picturesque corners, and, of course, the "Devil's fort" - all these objects are worthy to look at them at least once in life.
