What is the contrast in music, literature, photography and cinema?

Today we will consider what contrast is with respect to various areas of art and science. This term is found in music, mathematics, physics and literature, in the theatrical context and in the cinema. Contrast is also of great importance for photography and even for a painting painted with paints or pencils.

The general short notion

First, we determine what is the contrast, regardless of any industry. The term comes from the French word contraste, which translates into Russian as "the opposite." The essence of contrast is the difference of two (standard version) elements. Their differences can be not only in size, but also in shapes, colors, age ... in addition, the contrast can occur to us in intangible things. It's music, associations, dreams, dreams, people's behavior, voices, impressions and so on.

Music and its expression

Every musician knows perfectly well what contrast in music is. We will use their knowledge and enrich our horizons. At the heart of bright, emotional and non-standard works is precisely the contrast. It is achieved by comparing fundamentally different musical units. For example, it can be a contrast of hues - a sharp transition from a loudly played chord to a quiet search of notes. The difference may be in the modes - the first part of the work is performed in a minor, and the final part in major (Mozart's Fantasia in D minor). Similarly, contrasts in musical art are manifested in rhythm (change in size in the middle of the work), in tempo, in strokes. Very original sound plays, in which alternating a smooth legato and a staccato staccato.

Painting

Since the birth of the very first arts, people have known what contrast is, but they have used this technique very carefully. In the days of antiquity, in the Middle Ages, and even in the Renaissance, the color scheme was consistent in fashion. That is, if the picture should be dark - then all of its elements consist either of gray tones, or of brown ones. If something is painted, then all the colors are selected in accordance with this rule. At the end of the 19th century, the creators began to deviate from these standards, and the brightest, most expressive contrast went into action. This was not only in color, but also in forms. For example, Van Gogh emphasized the combination of the brightest shades in his works. Salvador Dali experimented with forms, and also compared the most incompatible objects among themselves. Pablo Picasso knew how to distort the proportions, that they looked deliberately wrong, but at the same time unique and very beautiful.

The photo

In our time, contrast is a definition that many people associate with photographic film or with electronic variants of pictures. The bottom line is that the photographic material conveys the difference in the characteristics of the various parts of the image. It can be very dark and very light colors, cold and warm tones, which in sum creates a saturation of the picture, makes it whole and bright. The brightest reception in photography is optical contrast. The basis of it is that one subject, which acts in the main role in the picture, is very different (by any signs) from the background. Optical contrast is divided into color (also found in the design of clothing and premises), as well as the contrast of lighting (the play of light and shadows).

Literature

In this area, one can most clearly see what the contrast of images is. Any work, whether it is a story, poem, poem or novel, consists of the main characters. The most interesting thing is that people are not necessarily in this role. They can be birds (Lermontov, "Birds of Heaven"), animals, natural phenomena (Fet, "Spring rain"), atmosphere (Block, "Night, street, lantern ..."), etc. The contrast here is mainly in Antonyms. They can occur either in the description or in direct speech. The second contrast of images is directly portraits of the main characters. Bad - good, high - low, sick - healthy, rich - poor, etc. In this context, Dostoevsky's works can be regarded as contrasting. He vividly shows the reader the difference between rich people and those representatives of society who have just removed from themselves the shackles of serfdom.

Cinema

Another type of art, where you can clearly see what a contrast is, is a movie. In principle, it can be combined here with the theater, since the principle of the actors' playing and the scenarios are identical. As in the literature, the contrast here is built on images and atmosphere. The type of behavior of the heroes is worked out. Someone behaves majestically, someone is low, some people have a good mood - others are depressed, someone is gullible, someone is sneaky. This builds any play, any film and any picture. It is possible to say with complete certainty that without a contrast it is impossible to write any novel and, accordingly, it is impossible to put a performance on it, nor to make a film.
