What does a small monkey of a clawed family look like?

The family of clawed monkeys (or gambling monkeys) is named so because, unlike other primates, on all fingers, except for large ones, they have nails and claws. This allows funny little animals to easily climb up tree trunks and spend all their lives there, practically not going down to the ground.

Let's get acquainted closer

The evolutionary clawed monkey is adapted to life in the upper layers of the Amazonian Selva. Among the leaves of huge trees, entangled by vines, in damp and semi-darkness, between year-round ripening nuts and fruits, these primates found themselves a comfortable place to survive.

A small animal, in comparison with other monkeys, can weigh only 35 grams, as, for example, dwarf igrinka chichiko. By the way, the length of her torso is only 15 cm. And the biggest in this family is the lion tamarin - 30 cm long.

What does the monkey-like monkey look like?

Playgrounds are not for nothing so called - they look very funny: the lion tamarins, for example, have long gray mustaches, in the stray whiskers on the ears grow bunches of long hair, similar to flowers, and the Oedipus Tatar is crowned with a crown of white hair.

The "toy" look, playfulness, silky fur and variegated coloring always attracted the attention of the person to the babies. Even the conquistadors could not resist their charm: a small monkey from the clawed family has long been transported to Europe by them. At one time, in the era of the last Ludovik, it was fashionable to keep these enchantresses in salons instead of lapdogs or cats. Moreover, these monkeys are tamed quickly enough, and they reproduce well in captivity. However, all this did not prevent to become some clawed monkeys extremely rare in their homeland.

A small monkey from the clawed family: kallimiko

These small monkeys (body length up to 22 cm) are one of those that are listed in the Red Book. Kallimiko have a soft long fur and are decorated with a small mane on top of the head, neck and shoulders. The muzzle and limbs are painted black, and their fur is brownish-black with yellow and white markings. Helmium marmosets, as these monkeys are also called, are very poorly studied.

It is known that, in addition to succulent fruits, they are very fond of insects, move on four legs and lead a daily life.

Like all family members, newborn babies are carried by the father, giving them to the female only for feeding. By the way, if the kid for some reason does not want to move to the back of the pope, the mother bites him, demanding to leave her alone. Until a year parents show concern for their offspring, after which the cubs become independent and expelled from the pack.

A small monkey from the clawed family: a yellow-headed marmozetka

This endemic species of monkeys living in Brazil is also endangered. They are very noticeable, thanks to the growing on the ears brushes of wool and a long tail. The favorite food of yellow-headed marmotets is the juice of a fragrant acacia, which they lick with a hole made in the trunk. When fruit ripens, crumbs switch to them.

Progeny in their family groups produces one alpha female, passing this "rank" by inheritance of her daughter. And the whole flock (up to 15 individuals) nurses and spoils the cubs. This cute little monkey from the clawed family often becomes an object of catching for sale as a pet.
