Weaving from newspaper tubes. Decor items from old newspapers

Weaving from the vine and cane is one of the oldest kinds of handicraft art. Quite complex man-made work, as a result of which extraordinary things were created, both in beauty and strength, was always appreciated highly. The real basket-makers were respected and honored. And it is not accidental, because wicker utensils occupied an honorable place in the peasant economy. Baskets, boxes and tuesa were indispensable for hiking in the forest for mushrooms and berries, and as very convenient containers for storing various products. Until now, wicker household items are very popular, not only for storage, but also for interior decoration.

We can master the methods of weaving, but a serious problem arises when raw materials are harvested. Vine, especially in urban conditions, harvested and properly prepared for work is problematic. But the people at us are sharp-witted, and someone "came up with" a brilliant idea to use for weaving old newspapers with which the storerooms and balconies of city apartments are littered. The idea is truly remarkable, firstly, amazing decorative objects are created with their own hands, and secondly, they are created from the deposits of old unnecessary newspapers cluttering the apartments. Weaving from newspaper tubes is a very convenient kind of needlework, because for self-realization and creative imagination, only hands and old newspapers or magazines will be needed here.

Weaving baskets from newspaper tubes

As with traditional weaving, work begins with the preparation of the material. Instead of a vine use the thin tubes, wound from a newspaper sheet. This process is quite long, the tubes need to be prepared a lot, but not complex.

1. We unfold the newspaper and fold it along in half, cut with a knife into two longitudinal strips. Then, each strip is folded along again and also cut. The width of each tape should be from 7 to 10 cm. We take a thin long knitting needle, apply its end to the lower right corner of the newspaper tape slightly obliquely so that the corner is formed as sharply as possible, and begin to twist the newspaper tape around the knitting needle. The upper corner of the newspaper is greased with glue and glued to the tube. We take out a spoke. It turned out a long thin tube of paper. Thus, we prepare material for weaving the basket.

2. The second stage of the work is weaving basket baskets from newspaper tubes. For beginners, before starting work, we recommend to take the basis for braiding (this can be a small round plastic jar), so it's easier to master the technique of weaving the basket, and the work will be even. The central part of the bottom consists of 16 tubes, which are divided into 4 groups of 4 pieces and are joined together in a staggered manner by ordinary linen weaving.

Now we need to take one long tube, fold it in half and fix it to one of the sides of the resulting square. Now weaving begins in a circle. The lower end of the tube is placed on top of the four tubes of the base, and the upper one is pulled down, then the upper four ends out below the next four tubes, and the lower one is pulled upward. Thus we braid the sides of the square and continue the weaving of three more rows, grasping the four tubules of the base. This method of weaving is called a "rope".

The next three rows of the plait are not on four tubes, but divide them into two. We grab the two tubules of the base alternately, then the upper, then the lower ends of the working tube. As necessary, the work tubes need to be increased, inserting each new one inside. After three more rows of the bottom of the basket are woven, the tubes of the base are separated one by one and begin to braid new rows, grabbing one more core tube.

We must try to ensure that all rows lie flat and tightly adjacent to each other.

3. After the required bottom is woven, we begin to weave from the newspaper tubes the side wall of the basket. Trumpets of the base bend upward and begin to braid the "string" row after row. Tubes of the base also increase as needed, inserting each new one inside. Weaving the basket to the desired height, the core tubes are bent inside and gently glued.

4. Now the finished basket can be covered with acrylic or aerosol paints and several layers of varnish. Finished products are also decorated with paper applications in the "decoupage" technique, or decorated with artificial flowers, ribbons and braid. Weaving from newspaper tubes, coated with varnish, becomes durable, the basket holds its shape well.

We must warn that the understanding of the basics of the weaving is not given immediately. Art is not easy, but with every new work it will get better and better. Weaving from paper tubes is an exciting activity. An ancient craft can start playing with new faces.
