We grow grapes in the suburbs. Preparing for winter

Grapes in our region are a rare plant, but in recent years significant changes have started to appear on this issue. More and more gardeners are mastering viticulture, as it allows you to receive a considerable amount of products of excellent quality. And who will refuse the house wine?

Since we have already spoken about this, we can not fail to note the main principles of agrotechnics, without which we can not grow grapes in the Moscow region. Preparation for winter is one of the most important aspects, non-observance of the conditions of which leads to the impossibility of obtaining any meaningful harvest.

How to protect the grapes from the hardships of Russian winter?

It's simpler and cheaper to arrange a suitable shelter. Just note that the best option is obtained only when the vine was planted by all rules, and the width and depth of the planting hole were not less than 60x60 cm. In this case, between the upper edge of the soil and the indentation in the hole, there is about 15cm of space where the grapes can be folded. In the suburbs, preparation for winter is pretty simple in many respects.

The easiest way is when the vine is still young, it is simply laid in a hole (folded into a ring) and sprinkled with peat or sawdust of deciduous varieties of wood. It is important to do this only in dry weather, pretreating the vine and the soil itself with 1-2% solution of copper sulfate. Necessarily collect all fallen grape leaves, as they are an excellent store for pathogens and pests.

Do not forget to cover over the poured soil with something waterproof. The same ruberoid is quite suitable. The dryness is important here, since the moist grapes in the suburbs (the preparation for the winter of which we are discussing) will simply get out in the cold.

More complex options

There are other ways to organize shelters. They are more applicable just the same to adult shrubs. In this case, the vine should be laid on clean dry boards, gently pricking them. If there is no way to find boards, you can lay and peg on dry land.

Above this design, it is necessary to install support arcs. You do not need to excel, making them out of metal or plastic, as the variant with arcs from branches is quite suitable. To hide the vine in the suburbs turned out to be as reliable as possible, on top of this kind of "greenhouse" you need to lay the spunbond in a couple of layers. This material "breathes", passing evaporation to the outside and preventing the entry of condensate and melt water onto the vines.

It is important to provide reliable protection against the bright winter sun, which can provoke the premature awakening of the kidneys. This can be achieved by laying on your "greenhouse" spruce lapnik. This same measure would be good to protect the grapes from voracious rodents. It would be nice to put poisoned lures under the spruce branches.

However, if there are no strong cold in your area, you can try to cultivate unconventional varieties of grapes for the Moscow region. Saperavi northern and Sukriba proved to be the best. In their case, a simple shelter from the lapnika is sufficient, since it is nevertheless necessary to insure against especially strong and frosty winters.

If you do everything right, then the grapes in the suburbs (the preparation for the winter of which we were stipulated) will be rewarded with the excellent harvests and high taste qualities of the berries.
