Trubnaya square in Moscow

The radial-circular principle of the layout of ancient Russian cities is a feature of the construction of ancient Russian cities and Moscow in particular. From the center of the settlement - the Kremlin walls - the expanding city was filled with ever new defensive walls. This was the prerequisite for the emergence of many areas of Moscow, including Trubnaya.

Pipe area: history of occurrence

At the end of the 16th century, on the bank of the Neglinka River, a new area appeared, limited by the wall of the White City then erected. In order not to destroy the river, for its channel in the lower part of the wall was made a hole, which in the people very soon began to be called simply a pipe. Near the exit from the "pipe" was placed Pipe market, which sold firewood, boards, logs, and even entire log buildings - all that is needed for construction.

When the wall of the White City was demolished in the late 18th century, waste began to be discharged to Neglinka, so very soon the river turned into a local garbage dump. Unsanitary conditions of the area demanded urgent intervention by the authorities, and Catherine II ordered the landscaping of the territory, the banks of the Neglinka in granite, and along the channel to install fountains. The project was not implemented, the riverbed was hidden underground in the reservoir. In some places, small free areas for building were formed. One of them was the place where Trubnaya Square will be later planned: just between the modern Tsvetnoy, Petrovsky and Christmas boulevards.

Dangerous Life Trubnaya

It is interesting that in the 19th century the square in the city played the role of a large modern transport hub: it was the first horse trails that passed through it. However, it was quite difficult to climb up the slope to the Konka square, the horses could drag a bulky wagon only with a take-off. When the tram replaced the tram in the 20th century, history did not change. In frequent accidents pedestrians died, sometimes injured and passengers.

The next two historical moments, which revived even more the life of Trubnaya Square, were connected with the moving here first of the "flower garden" - the flower market from Red Square, and then the bird market. And Muscovites bought the bird not only for consumption as food, but also for humane purposes - released at will.

In the people this area for quite a long time had a bad reputation. In history, it is known as the "Red Light District". She received her name in connection with the fact that criminal ruffians and kokots were gathering on her.

In addition, there were "Crimea", "Hell" and "Hell".

"Crimea" is a complex of three city facilities connected with the wild life of the townspeople: a tavern, a hotel and an inn.

"Hell" - the second part of the complex, available only for "dedicated". It consisted of small rooms - "smithies" and large rooms - "fucking mills".

There was also an underground part - a tavern "Hell", where a very dangerous audience was gathering. Here they played cards for money and life, drank beverages accepted among the exiles and convicts, and decided on matters that the government did not like.

It is with Trubnaya Square that important events of the political life of the city are connected: an attempt was made on the tsar, as well as a mass death of the residents of the capital who attended the funeral of Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin.

Monument on Trubnaya

In 1994 on Trubnaya Square in Moscow was opened the stele "Grateful Russia - the soldiers of law and order, who died in the line of duty." This event summarizes all of the above. After all, this square is a bloody place in the capital, where not only the citizens of the city died, but also the law enforcement officers who tried to put things in order in the most bandit corners of Moscow. The authors of the stele are AV Kuzmin and AA Bichukov.

The monument is made in the form of a Roman triumphal column, the trunk of which is cast from bronze. The column is mounted on a granite stepped pedestal, the base is decorated with bas-reliefs. On one of them is depicted Mother, grieving over the body of her dead son.

On the column there is a figure of St. George the Victorious, who kills a snake with a spear. The symbolism of the sculpture is obvious: George the Victorious personifies the warrior of the Law and the Law and Order, and the snakes are the criminals with whom he fights and invariably wins. It should be noted that the image is different from the canonical one - George the Victorious is depicted not as a horse rider, but as a standing warrior trampling the snake-enemy's foot.

The height of the column reaches 32.5 m, which is 15.5 m below the famous Alexander Column in St. Petersburg.

Every year a memorial watch passes near the monument, where workers of the Moscow police gather and lay flowers - a tribute to the dead defenders of law and order.

Places of interest in Trubnaya Square

At the corner of Trubnaya Square and Neglinnaya Street there is a historical building in which the School of Contemporary Play is located. Earlier on the site of this building was a tobacco stall, and in the XIX century, by the project of D. Chichagov, this building was built, designed for the fashionable French restaurant "Hermitage", in which the entire aristocratic elite of Moscow gathered. It was here that the famous chef-inventor Lucien Olivier shone with his art.

This restaurant is connected with the name of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, who signed a contract with the famous book publisher Suvorin to print the complete collection of his works.

But the house on the corner with the Bolshoy Golovin lane has the historical name "House with pregnant caryatids." It housed one of the most popular brothels in aristocratic Moscow.

Nearby, on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, is the famous circus of Yuri Nikulin.

How to get to Trubnaya Square? The most convenient way to travel is the Moscow subway: to the station "Trubnaya Square" or "Tsvetnoy Boulevard".

And in order not to confuse anything, we suggest that you look in advance at the photo of Pipe Square.

Enjoy your trip and unforgettable impressions!
