Treatment of prostate cancer in Israel

Prostate cancer (prostate cancer) is the most common oncological disease among the male part of the population. Prostate cancer affects about four hundred thousand people every year. This ailment is among the main causes of death of men, especially after 45-50 years. Also, the development of the disease can contribute to smoking, work in harmful industries, abuse of fatty foods. The tumor can develop on the basis of other infectious diseases of the genitourinary tract.

The growth of the tumor in the prostate gland leads to compression of the urinary tract, difficulty urinating, intoxication of the body with excretory products of excretion. When the form is launched, the tumor sprouts into the tissues adjacent to the prostate gland and metastasizes.

In medicine, the allocation of four stages of the disease:

  1. Early stage, in which the tumor is not detected during examination.
  2. The tumor is detected during examination, but does not yet affect adjacent tissues and organs.
  3. The tumor sprouts into the adjacent tissues.
  4. The appearance of metastases.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

  • Difficulty with urination (pain, tension, urinary retention).
  • Problems with potency.
  • Pain when sperm is secreted.
  • Pain in the area of the back, waist, perineum, thighs.
  • The appearance of blood in the urine.

Diagnosis of prostate cancer

Timely detection of the disease is complicated by the fact that its early stage proceeds without severe pain and other disturbing symptoms, and the tumor, because of its small size, is not detected in digital rectal examination. At this stage, the tumor can be detected accidentally, during operations and examinations related to other diseases. About 20-25% of cases are incidentally detected.

Modern survey methods include:

  • General blood analysis
  • A blood test for PSA (prostatic specific antigen)
  • Urinalysis
  • Ultrasound with rectal sensor
  • Biopsy
  • Radioisotope examination of the skeleton (scintigraphy)
  • MRI
  • CT and PET / CT.

Correct diagnosis requires detailed examinations using modern equipment, because the diagnosis of this disease has a number of difficulties. Thus, the level of PSA may increase for other reasons (for example, immediately after sexual intercourse), and symptoms of prostate cancer are characteristic for a number of other diseases.

The results of the examination are considered by the urologist, uro-oncologist, radio-oncologist and surgeon for making an accurate diagnosis and choice of treatment. Since some of the methods used to treat prostate cancer involve side effects, physicians can suggest to the patient himself to choose the desired treatment method from those suitable in his case.

Surgical treatment of prostate cancer in Israel

Conducting a classical operation is effective in the early stages, when the tumor did not have time to germinate into other tissues. In most cases, Israeli surgeons use laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgical intervention), including using the Da Vinci surgical robot. However, the latest ultra-modern technique is still the most expensive of surgical operations.

Radiological treatment of prostate cancer in Israel

Radiation therapy is used for an inoperable tumor, particularly in the late stages of the disease.

Intensively modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is effective in the localization of tumors in organs difficult to achieve for conventional radiation therapy, including prostate gland. This innovative method allows you to adjust the power of exposure in one session. The session of IMPT lasts from fifteen minutes to half an hour, and the entire course of treatment is designed for several weeks.

Chemotherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer in Israel today is used only in some rare cases: for the treatment of cancer of the fourth stage and with squamous cell carcinoma, in combination with radiation therapy.

Brachytherapy - the introduction of a radioactive isotope into the tumor with a needle (usually palladium or radioactive iodine) to irradiate cancer cells from the inside. Due to the exact location of the nuclei in the tumor, the intensity of radiation can be increased two to three times, compared to conventional radiotherapy, which also affects healthy tissues. This method has some side effects, in particular it can have a negative effect on healthy cells of the body, but they are less than with other traditional methods of treatment of prostate cancer. May also occur interference with urination, but they go through one to two months.

Hormonal therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer in Israel

It is used in Israel for the treatment of prostate cancer in advanced stages, including metastases. It reduces the size of the tumor, and also stops the spread of cancer cells. This method is also associated with side effects.

Treatment of prostate cancer in Israel has the highest efficiency in the world - about 90%, despite the difficulties in the timely detection and diagnosis of this disease. For the prevention and early detection of this ailment, a regular visit to a urologist is recommended, which for men over fifty years old is worth annually.
