Transplanting daffodils - tips and tricks

Many landscape designers, florists and gardeners rightly consider narcissus a universal bulbous plant. A huge variety of varieties and species of these flowers makes it very effective to manipulate them in the garden: they look great on flowerbeds, and on rocky slides or in wild gardens.

In addition, these plants can not be called exclusively spring, because some of their species blossom well both in summer and in autumn. This small feature gives them a huge advantage over other onion plants. Their unpretentiousness and frost resistance ensures high popularity among florists and gardeners. Usually these flowers are preferred to be left in place for five years, but this is a mistake. If you study some of the features of their vegetation, it becomes clear that the transplantation of daffodils is very important.

Unlike other bulbous plants, which are updated every year, the replacement of the bulb of this flower occurs gradually and constantly. Its flakes grow in peculiar layers from the center and are constantly updated. Each such layer exists for four years, after which it desiccates and dies, and in the formed sinuses small bulb-babies are formed, which after the withering of the layer have the ability to germinate and become an independent plant. Thus, from year to year, daffodils grow denser, and soon they no longer have enough resources for life. In this case, they begin to bloom very little.

From these facts, and follow conclusions about how important is the transplantation of narcissus for their development. It must necessarily be produced at least once in 3-4 years, in order to avoid chopping bulbs and flowers. At the same time, young seedlings should not be moved until their babies are formed in their onion.

Transplanting daffodils in the spring

Although the rest period of flowers falls in August, at this time the transplantation of daffodils can pass most successfully. Many foreign florists practice the transfer of plants at any time. This can occur even during the growing season. Daffodils, the transplantation of which was made during flowering, usually immediately fall, but the next year their bulbs increase markedly in volume and more actively blossom. It should be remembered that during this operation at an incorrect time, excessive drying of roots and bulbs should be avoided.

Transplantation of daffodils in summer

When planting daffodils in the summer, they are usually fed with potassium sulfate and superphosphate in proportions of 20 g and 40 g, respectively, per square meter. The soil must be dug and mulched. After that, its watering stops for the time necessary for the withering of the old roots. Daffodils dig out necessarily in dry weather. Babies and bulbs are disinfected in a solution of potassium permanganate and thoroughly dried. Prior to disembarkation, they are stored in plastic boxes at a temperature of 13-17 degrees. It should be remembered that they should be laid only in one layer, otherwise there is a high risk of rotting bulbs.
