Tikhvin. Sights of an ancient city

The city of Tikhvin is in the Leningrad region. Its population (as of 2009) is sixty thousand people. Tikhvin, whose sights are known far beyond its borders, is one of the largest transport hubs in the region. It is also a cultural and industrial center.

Tikhvinsky Assumption Monastery is an architectural object of great interest to all lovers of antiquity. Its construction, begun under the decree of Ivan the Terrible, was completed in 1560. The holy abode is located on the bank of Tikhvinka - a local river. The main relic of the monastery is the icon of the Virgin of Hodegetria. Currently, it attracts many pilgrims. In 1943 a miraculous shrine was taken out by the invaders to Pskov. German soldiers gave it to representatives of the Orthodox faith. Then the icon visited Jablonec, Libau, Riga and Chicago. In 2004, the shrine was returned to the monastery.

In 1844 a great Russian composer was born in this building. A unique building has survived to this day. Using the example of this house, you can see how all provincial gentry buildings were designed at the dawn of the 19th century. The building has the status of a state museum. Employees of this scientific and educational institution are engaged in the restoration, research, acquisition and storage of materials included in the basic fund associated with the life and creative activities of Rimsky-Korsakov.

Tikhvin. Sights. Rekonskaya chapel

The building was erected in 1787 by architect M.A. Shchurupova. The structure is completed by a tetrahedral tent with an onion-shaped cupola. At present, a unique architectural monument is open to visitors. Now the building is renamed the chapel of Alexander Nevsky.

The territory of this natural park is protected by the state. It stretches for 190 thousand hectares. Thanks to the existence of the Veps forest, it is possible to ensure the protection of a unique nature, a detailed study of Veps culture and history, and the creation of comfortable recreational conditions. In the territory of this natural park, important scientific research is carried out. Programs for the environmental education of local residents and tourists are constantly being organized.

No less interesting is the Veps Forest Museum. The first part of the exposition represents everything that is connected with the nature of the park. The second one introduces tourists to the way of life of people who inhabited these places many centuries ago. You can get to the museum only with the help of a guide. The exposition is located on the second floor of the local administration.

Tikhvin's map with attractions includes another interesting place. This is a museum located within the walls of the Bogoroditsky Monastery. In it, tourists can get acquainted with more than twenty thousand exhibits, which fully characterize the culture and history of Tikhvin.
