Sukhumi Botanical Garden

But, despite all this, the Botanical Garden has survived and is functioning at the present time.

The old linden of the Botanical Garden

One of the most interesting sights of the garden is a three-hundred-year-old linden (Caucasian), which grew here even before the park's foundation. Its diameter is three meters. In 1877 the tree was cut down by the Turks. However, it did not die and continued to grow, reaching a height of twenty meters. In 1987 during the hurricane the main part of the crown was spoiled. Many years have passed since then, but the lime tree fructifies and blossoms till now.

Castle of the Prince of Oldenburg

The building itself was located on the slope of the mountain not far from the place where the Joëvara River flows into the waters of the Black Sea. The castle was built in 1902 in Art Nouveau style. The author of the project was the architect Lutseransky. The palace itself is a beautiful and amazing building with a red tiled roof, tall chimneys, balconies, falconry tower, which miraculously fits into the whole ensemble of buildings. Simultaneously with the construction of a beautiful castle, the prince began to implement his plan for creating a real climatic resort, which could become a "Russian Nice". This became his main merit.

His financial investments made it possible to create a telegraph and a subtropical technical school, a water pipe was installed and electric lighting was done. And in 1903 the climatic station was inaugurated. It is January 9, 1903 is considered the day of the founding of the resort.

Sukhumi

The Besletsky Bridge is laid out of stone slabs, the thickness of the masonry is 80 centimeters. It has a very simple design. Stone vaults are connected by limestone, which for the construction was extinguished for about five years.

The bridge has survived to our times, and it is possible to move around it, it can withstand up to eight thousand kilograms. At present, it is a historical monument of Abkhazia, which has no analogue.

Sights of Gagry
