The majestic castle of Bomaris, the atmosphere of which plunges into medieval England

The building to strengthen power in Wales

Located on the island of Anglesey, the castle of Bomaris seems to block the entrance to the Menai Strait. In 1295, on the site of a small Viking settlement, King Edward I ordered the erection of powerful fortifications to strengthen power in Wales. More than 2,500,000 workers took part in the construction of the majestic structure.

However, three years later, the war in Scotland began, and because of the shortage of funds in the treasury, the grandiose construction was frozen.

Expensive building

In 1306 the construction was resumed, but not on the same scale as before. Many grandiose plans were not destined to come true. For example, the premises in the northern part of the castle are not fully completed, as are the rooms of the second floor. Under the project there were luxurious royal suites for the monarch's family.

The erection of impregnable fortress ensembles was an extremely expensive pleasure in those times, as a large amount of labor and building materials were expended. According to researchers, at the castle of Bomaris, which received royal status, it was spent more than 20 million euros (in translation for our money). In the fortress and its environs, only Normans and English settled, and residents of Welsh descent were deprived of such rights.

Symmetrical citadel

The architectural project surprised with its symmetry. Everything was subordinated to the fact that the enemy could not seize the castle of Bomaris in Wales: two rings of powerful walls, a ditch filled with water, loopholes, cunning obstacles for an enemy who accidentally entered the fortress. As the experts say, the citadel built on the marshes is recognized as the most difficultly overcome fortress among such structures.

There were about fourteen traps for the spies of the enemy, and only having passed them all, one could get into the fortress. Unfortunately, after the death of the king, no one was engaged in erecting a stone ensemble. Several decades later, unsuccessful attempts were made to finish building the Bomaris.

The castle, striking with its power, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unusual structure of a historical monument

The original landmark of the project had a concentric structure. Outside, Beaumaris Castle is surrounded by a huge five-meter moat, beyond which there are external powerful walls. Inside the historical complex with living rooms and a small chapel is protected on all sides by a ring of fortifications, and in the center there is a small courtyard where there were stables, servants' rooms, kitchen and warehouses.

If you examine the castle of Bomaris from above, then the symmetry of the objects located in it will be noticeable, which increases the invulnerability of the protective structure.

On the south side, to the fortress walls, there is a station erected for ships and guarded by gates, which were raised at the right time. The fact is that the ditch was previously connected to the sea and was filled with water during the tides, thanks to which the multi-ton ships with provisions could come close to the castle walls and unloaded unhindered inside it.

The peculiarity of the castle

The main feature of the complex is the absence of a dungeon - an obligatory main tower, which was erected in an inaccessible place for the enemy. Instead, 16 small towers appeared along the outer wall, and six powerful structures were built inside the castle, which protected the entrances during the storming of the enemy and increased the defensive capacity of the impregnable fortress.

The stone complex, which escaped attacks by the enemy, appears before the descendants in its original form. The ancient castle of Bomaris can be called without exaggeration the symbol of medieval England, and specialists in the field of military construction admire the ingenious engineering thought of the architect who designed the citadel in the marshes.
