The legendary islands of Greece

The magic phrase "distant islands" attracts all true travelers, promising unexplored land with exotic nature, new cities, interesting meetings and discoveries. And if under the unknown islands are meant the islands of Greece - it is almost impossible to resist. After all, the Greek land has long been covered with myths and poetic legends, which are known to us since childhood and are real pearls in the treasury of world culture. The nature of Greece is as unique as its history - the seaside with sandy beaches, southern flora and fauna, abounding in bright colors, attracting countless tourists every year.

The most famous islands of Greece are Crete, Corfu and Rhodes. After the legendary Crete, considered the cradle of the god Zeus, the most interesting for tourists, rightfully considered to be the island of Rhodes. According to the legend, Rhodes was presented by Zeus to the solar god Helios, in honor of which the island was installed the famous statue of the Colossus of Rhodes. The statue, which had an unheard-of altitude of about 37 meters, served simultaneously as a beacon for ships sailing to the island. Because of the imperfection of its design, the Colossus of Rhodes lasted only a short time, just over half a century and was destroyed by a strong earthquake. Despite this, a giant statue was put on the list of seven wonders of the world.

Rhodes - an island with a stormy history, which is imprinted in a variety of public and residential buildings. And, numerous architectural monuments of different epochs, perfectly harmoniously flow into modern, fashionable areas of Rhodes. A vivid example of such a combination is the capital of Rhodes, with the same name, located in the north of the island. The city of Rhodes, as seen by tourists today, consists of two, parallel, existing worlds.

The first world is a fabulous and mysterious city of the Middle Ages, surrounded by powerful fortress walls. The huge gates leading to the fortress are marked by two symmetrically located watchtowers. The main street, bearing the name of the Knights of the Ioannites, leads directly to the steps of the palace of the Grand Masters of this order. The interiors of the palace amaze with its beauty and luxury of decoration, a large number of carvings, as well as fortifications and underground warehouses, typical of many buildings of that time.

And the other world is a multifunctional resort city that provides tourists with the widest choice of places of cultural rest and entertainment. Like other islands in Greece, Rhodes Island has an extensive network of tourist hotels of different levels, shops, a lot of restaurants, bars, night and day clubs, discos and casinos.

For those who prefer quiet rest to peaceful rest and contemplation of the beauties of nature, it is best to use the island of Zakynthos located in the Ionian Sea. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth, striking imagination by a combination of white rocks with numerous grottoes and caves, emerald greenery, sandy beaches and bright blue sea space. Beaches of Zakynthos deserve special attention. The local administration has created all conditions for a full rest on the water. Those who prefer an active lifestyle can go in for water sports or devote their day to boating and swimming. And for those who like to combine business with pleasure, there are various sightseeing routes. Among them is a boat trip to the Blue Caves, the most important landmark of Zakynthos. The blue caves formed sea waves that hit the coastal rocks year after year.

Certainly, it is possible to describe the islands of Greece indefinitely, as long as to visit them. However, reading is unlikely to replace the real feelings from the experiences, for it is not without reason that the well-known proverb says that it is better to see once than hear a hundred times.
