Taking drugs is buccal - is it like?

If taking pills or other medications is prescribed buccally - it's like using candy or another "long-playing sweetness". That is, the medicine must be placed between the upper lip and the gum or simply dissolve, leaving it behind the cheek.

Methods of taking medications

If we consider enteral (through the digestive tract) ways of introducing drugs into the body, we can identify 4 ways. First, it is oral (usual ingestion). Thus, they take tablets and powders, capsules and potions. That is, drugs in a liquid, solid or loose state. Tablets or lozenges can be prescribed transbuccally (this usually refers to instant drugs, but there are exceptions). The method consists in resorption of the tablet or lozenges in the oral cavity, that is, buccally.

The third method is sublingual (placement under the tongue). It is used in cases of unwanted contact of the drug with tooth enamel, or when there is a risk that the patient, having lost consciousness, may be choked with a pill.

The fourth option is rectal (through the anus). Thus, candles are mainly used in the treatment of young children or with local therapy. Or in the case of problems with the digestive system, interfering with the normal absorption of the drug. What kind of option to apply in this or that case, determines the specialist.

What does the buccal

Literally this term in Latin means "buzz". Many people, far from medicine, not understanding the specifics of the terminology and forgetting to ask the attending physician the meaning of this word, begin to invent their own options.

Therefore, specialists are advised to minimize the use of such complex terms when dealing with patients. The patient has no idea what it means to take tablets buccally, but it will perfectly understand that it needs to be dissipated by placing it on the cheek. And already in his documents and the patient's medical record it is possible to write an appointment using the appropriate terminology.

What drugs are prescribed buccal

Of the most common means is glycine (improves brain metabolism). It is used to raise mood and overall well-being in depression, stressful situations, various diseases of the nervous system, strokes, as an auxiliary therapy in the treatment of drug addiction and in some other cases. Use recommend sublingual or buccal. This method is chosen to accelerate the entry into the blood of the active substance.

By means of resorption, some antiviral, hormonal and local medicine drugs are also used. For example, if a patient has an acute toothache, he is prescribed analgesics either orally or transbuccally. In the latter case, the effect is achieved much faster. There are lots of lollipops for dental or otolaryngological use.

In what cases is it better to choose a sublingual method

If the patient is in a condition close to the unconscious, swallowing is difficult and there is a high risk that the drug may get into the airways, the tablet is recommended to be placed under the tongue. The process of resorption in this case will slightly slow down (due to insufficient saliva), however the risk of inhaling the pill or its accidental ingestion is minimized.

Sublingually, as a rule, appoint validol and other soothing drugs. Thus, they use drugs whose effect can adversely affect the tooth enamel. To minimize contact of the active substance, the tablet is placed under the tongue.

Disadvantages of the method

Despite the fact that the tranbuccal administration of drugs is considered one of the most effective, simple and rapid in terms of impact, there are also its negative sides. Firstly, it is a taste of the drug. It is common knowledge that most drugs have unpleasant bitterness. If the patient receives them orally without any problems, then with resorption, he may experience quite vivid discomfort up to the gag reflex. For this reason, not all and not all can be prescribed buccal (this is usually quite individual, someone can suffer a little for the sake of profit, and others - not).

This method is also unacceptable for the administration of drugs that can adversely affect the mucosa. For example, if the medicine is so aggressive that it can cause inflammation or even ulcers in the mouth, it is best to swallow it whole.

And in general the decision on a way of reception of a preparation should be accepted by the expert. As a rule, in the annotation all the options are prescribed (in case the doctor forgets to mention them). True, not everyone understands, buccal - it's like, or that means sublingually, but in the instructions for medications a simple conversation form is unlikely to be appropriate.
