Storage of gladioli at home: highlights

Majestic gladioli, happy gardeners since early August, complete their next cycle with the onset of autumn. Bulbs should be sent to winter flats, because the cold for them is disastrous. Storage of gladioli at home is not difficult, but requires compliance with certain rules.

When to dig out gladioli

Bulbs clean fully matured: from the moment of blossoming or cutting must pass at least a month, and in late varieties - up to 45-50 days. With cleaning, you can not delay to prevent the decay and development of fungal diseases. Bulbs are selected from the ground in dry weather. If the soil is wet or, conversely, hardened and dry, many children are lost. First of all, early-flowing varieties and gladioli with dark-colored flowers are removed: cherry, dark red, purple, because they have low immunity to fungal diseases. Lastly, they dig up tubers grown from children.

Culling

To store gladioli at home was successful, you need to lay down for the winter only quality material. Need to shake off excess land and carefully inspect the bulbs. It is necessary to throw out all sick and damaged tubers, as well as children with a burst shell. Roots and stems immediately after digging are shortened to 1 cm, so that the drying process is faster.

Disinfection and drying

To prevent putrefactive processes of gladioli, it is recommended to hold 15 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate (10 g per bucket of water) or in garlic water (1 kg pounded mass per bucket of liquid). Before storing for storage, the bulbs are dried for a month in a ventilated room. They are laid out in one layer and kept at a temperature of 20-23 0 C.

Storing gladiolus tubers

The ideal place for wintering gladioli is dry dry cellar with good air circulation. Optimum storage temperature is 4-6 0 С, relative humidity is 65-80%. Babies love colder air (1-2 ° C) and slightly higher relative humidity. It is better to have tubers in low boxes with a mesh bottom.

Storing gladioli in the apartment

Healthy and well-dried material can be stored in a city apartment at +18 +20 0 C, but in this case, by the spring, the bulbs noticeably lose in volume. They are put, not wrapping, so that the tubers do not touch each other, and store in the dark (for example, in a shoe box under the bed). Before planting, such bulbs should be sustained in a growth stimulant, and they will develop well and bloom.

Of course, it's better to pick up the coolest place in the apartment for storing gladioli at home. It can be a glazed loggia, a cold sill or a bottom shelf in the refrigerator.

It is desirable to avoid fluctuations in temperature and high humidity. Several times during the winter it is necessary to inspect the bulbs. Sick and dried specimens are removed. If there is a danger of infection with thrips, you can powder the tubers with chalk, put together a slice of garlic or make processing "Inta-Vir". You can also dip the tubers into the melted paraffin. This will prevent drying and protect the bulbs from the effects of mold fungi.

Special Option

There is another way of such an event, like storing gladioli at home. It involves digging bulbs at regular intervals. But! You need to leave some roots on the roots, and put the plant in a high plastic bag, without cutting the leaves. In this improvised greenhouse the bulb continues to grow and mature, gradually taking the nutrients out of the stem. By December, the withered leaves are removed, the bulbs are treated with preparations from pests and stored until the spring in a cool room.

This method can be used by gardeners who grow late-flowering varieties in areas with short summers.
