Signs of concussion in the child

The main cause of injury in children older than a year is a drop from the height of their growth, and later - a fall from trees, stairs, windows, roofs, slides and other things. Signs of concussion in the child at this age are manifested by loss of consciousness, vomiting, nausea. The symptoms are often accompanied by tearfulness, capriciousness, sleep disturbance.

In some cases, signs of brain concussion in a child may manifest as posttraumatic blindness, different diameter of the left and right eyes, inability to recognize relatives or objects.

The episode of traumatism can not always be determined. It should be noted that if a child is observed by relatives, neighbors or a nanny, they may not inform the parents of the child's injury.

Trauma to the brain can occur without direct traumatization of the head. Such a case is a consequence of the impact on the child of a sharp inhibition or acceleration. The emergence of the syndrome of a "shaken child" is revealed at the age of four to five years and is the result of rough handling, jumps from height. In children at a young age, such a syndrome can occur due to increased intensity of motion sickness.

The first signs of concussion in children are manifested by swelling in the area of the stroke, bleeding from it, or the flow of clear liquid from the nose or ears, convulsions.

This kind of trauma, being the most common, does not involve gross and irreversible changes, and can lead to complications in rare cases.

If a head injury occurs, the baby should be given first aid immediately. On the damaged area should be imposed a tight bandage. In case of a deep wound and continuous bleeding, it is necessary to take the child to a trauma center or call an ambulance.

In cases of a shallow wound and stop bleeding, a cold compress should be applied to the area of the injury. After removing it, the affected area must be treated with antiseptic, apply a napkin impregnated with antibacterial ointment and bandage with bandage.

After getting injured, the child must be in bed for 12-24 hours. It is necessary to watch, that within an hour after a trauma the kid did not fall asleep. At the end of this time, he can be allowed to sleep, but every two hours it should be awakened to check the condition.

The fact of injury must be reported to the doctor in charge. To avoid consequences, the child must be taken for inspection. The specialist can prescribe medication or hospitalization. It should be noted that medical examination does not always entail hospitalization. However, in many cases, especially when traumatizing at an early age, hospitalization is necessary.
