Self-made boats for fishing and recreation

Probably, every lover of fishing at least once thought about how to make a self-made boat. It's not an easy task, but it's real to make such a boat. And it is not necessary to be an engineer, all that is required of you is enthusiasm and a few hours of free time. And how to make self-made boats from plywood, you will learn from our today's article.

Production difficulties

Is it really difficult to make such a design with a minimal set of tools? As practice shows, even with such equipment, a self-made inflatable boat (or plywood) is done easily in 3-4 hours. In view of the fact that all the work required to spend a minimum of time, you can make a boat at least in the open air. Well, in case of changing weather, it can always be covered with tarpaulins or a piece of polyethylene film.

What are good homemade boats from plywood?

First, plywood is a light, durable and fairly warm material. It's almost impossible to kill such a boat, and it does not weigh too much. Secondly, unlike rubber analogues of space in a plywood boat is enough for several people (while inside, between the seats, you can fit all the necessary fishing gear). In store, the same options for free space is sorely lacking. Thirdly, being in a wooden boat, do not feel any discomfort.

Preparation of materials

The main material from which self-made boats are made is plywood. There are no difficulties with its search in the market. Plywood is, perhaps, the most affordable and cheap material for such works. And working with it is very convenient.

Let's get down to business

First of all, I would like to note that any work related to the independent manufacture of a facility (be it a tractor or something else, it does not matter) should be carried out clearly according to the prescribed scheme. In this case, you must have drawings of self-made boats in your hands. In some cases, the drawings can be replaced with a sketch pattern.

So how are homemade boats made? For the assembly of the case you will need to prepare dry boards with a thickness of 2.5 centimeters and a 6-millimeter sheet of plywood. The width of the boards for stern and sides should be 30.5 centimeters. This is the most optimal size for a fishing boat. All the other elements that are inside the structure (seats and struts) are made of boards measuring 2.5 cm in width. The length of these parts is 86.4 centimeters. It should be borne in mind that the dimensions of all these elements must be precisely maintained, since they are all attached to the body of the boat only by self-tapping screws.

The manufacture of all the details and elements of this design absolutely does not cause any difficulties and difficulties. This is due to their simple geometric form.

In the course of the work, pay special attention to the fitting of the surfaces to be joined and the frill of the boat. All joint edges must be carefully adjusted and have the minimum gaps along the entire length. As fastening elements, either tin-plated or galvanized screws are used. As for the dimensions of these fasteners, depending on the place of application, they can be as follows:

  1. 3х26 and 3х18 millimeters - for the lining of the boat;
  2. 4x60 and 5x64 mm - for all other parts of the structure (for example, seats, stern and sides).

The bottom of the boat is made of a sheet of plywood thickness of 6 millimeters. But, since this part of the swimming device will be constantly exposed to water, for waterproofness of the boat the joints of the hull and the bottom are treated with glue like "VIAM-B / 3" and fastened with screws around the perimeter. If such a facility is not available ("VIAM-B / 3"), as an alternative oil paint is quite suitable. Although it does not have good adhesive properties and characteristics, it gives a strong and waterproof coating. It should be noted that the distance between the screws should be about 4 centimeters. External joints should be carefully glued with a cloth or percale with the help of "AK-20". In order not to fail the bottom of the boat, between the spacers is installed rack bars (cross-section of racks - 5x2 centimeters).

How to properly craft homemade boats?

Perhaps the most critical step in the construction of this swimming device is the painting of its plywood enclosure. How to do it right?

Before painting the boat, you must carefully primed it. Here you will need to prepare a thick brush and natural linseed oil, which will serve as a primer. In order for it to be absorbed into the material, preheat it to the boiling point before application. The natural linseed oil is applied not only to the outer, but also to the inside of the boat.

Immediately after applying this material to the wood surface of the boat, proceeding to its coloration is strictly not recommended. First you need to wait a few minutes until the drying oil finally absorbs into the tree. After the primer has completely dried, you can safely proceed with the application of the paint.

What colors should I choose for a boat?

The most popular and, perhaps, harmonious is the combination of white and red shades. And the first is applied to the lower part of the boat (to the waterline), and the rest of the surface is covered in red. The inner part is not necessarily covered by the same, the most popular option is a light green tone.

Rules of application

It must be said that the paint that is sold in shops in tin cans and is often applied to wooden fences will not be the best option for our boat, which spends most of its time in the water. Therefore, we will receive it in a special way. So, what is needed to do this? To get a red color, you need to use a lead- colored reddish, and a white shade will give zinc and lead white. The resulting liquid should be diluted with clean linseed oil. In this case, the calculation is made so that the boat can be painted 2-3 times more. By its properties, liquid paint is better, it spreads more easily, and therefore gives a stronger and even coating. When applying this product to the boat, wide soft brush-flutes are used.

Some enthusiasts use nitro-paint, based on their high-quality coating. However, we do not recommend using them for such boats, since they do not provide the necessary durability to the wood (accordingly, the structure becomes less and less durable and unusable every year).

Important points

If self-made motor boats are manufactured, an additional drawing of special fasteners for an electric or gasoline engine is additionally done. However, a simpler and cheaper option would be the use of ordinary oars. They are often made from a 35-meter birch board. At the end of the spindle, a spike with a handle is installed, and brass lining is applied to the blade edge. Next, the oar is primed and painted.

Well and at last it is a little statistics. As practice shows, the average life of plywood boats is about 15-20 years. Such vitality can not boast of plastic, or even rubber, their competitors.
