Russian state borders

The Russian Federation is the largest state in the world. Its area is one sixth of the land of the whole Earth, and the population is more than 143 million people. The length of Russia's borders is 63,993 kilometers. Russia has state borders with many countries in Europe and Asia. In the northwest lies the border with Norway at 219.1 km, to the south of the border with Finland at 1325.8 km. This concludes the state borders of the Russian Federation with the Scandinavian countries .

Still further south along the river Narva (or Narov) is the border with Estonia in 466.8 kilometers, then the Latvian border 270 km. The state border of the Russian Federation with Poland and Lithuania passes through Kaliningrad (Kenigsberg in the past), and its area is 236 and 288 kilometers respectively.

The following borders - with our East Slavic sisters - Ukraine in 1925 km and Belarus - in 1239 km.

Further, the border with the other former republics of the USSR: Georgia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Azerbaijan. It so happened that, given their relative short duration, these boundaries have for centuries brought to Russian rulers a lot of worries. And the protection of the state border of the Russian Federation in this area has always required special efforts.

Nearly half of all southern borders are the border with Kazakhstan - 7,125 km. Kazakhstan is a very rich, large and interesting country from a cultural point of view.

Then there is a small - only 12 km - border with China. This country covers all the eastern, southern and western borders of Mongolia and is once again in contact with Russia for 4,209 km. The border with the once powerful, and now lost in the desert steppe country - Mongolia - 3,485.

Then we border with the DPRK, the Korean People's Democratic Republic, or North Korea - 39.4 kilometers.

Russia goes to three oceans and a lot of seas, and on them, too, has borders with different states. The state borders of the Russian Federation by sea are Norway (23 km), Finland (54.1 km), Estonia (150 km), Lithuania (Kaliningrad 22 km), Poland (32 km Kaliningrad), Ukraine (320 km) Georgia (22), Azerbaijan (22), Kazakhstan (85.9 km), North Korea (22.1), Japan (194.3), the United States (49 km).

In the presence of such a huge number of borders with different countries have their pros and cons.

Firstly, these are huge transit opportunities. With a developed system of air travel, good equipping of warehouses, fast and extensive communication of railways, one could earn good money on logistics of imported goods from Asia to Europe, Africa, America and vice versa. Unfortunately, transport facilities are too poorly developed for a stable system in Russia.

Secondly, these are good opportunities for cooperation with border countries. Russian tourists can easily travel to many countries, there are great opportunities for imports and exports.

Russia's state borders can also become a problem because of its length: in the event of war, many enemies may appear, it is difficult to control the irrepressible flow of illegal migration from third world countries, it takes a lot of energy and money for the productive work of border services.

The Russian Federation has the largest area and the longest border in the world. The length of the border is greater than the equator, passes through all climatic zones and time zones.
