Rollback is what? How do I roll back a system to Windows?

It often happens that after downloading a malicious program or a file infected with a virus, important system data is corrupted or deleted, resulting in the PC starting to work worse or not at all. In this case, you can fix the situation by restoring the system or rolling back.

What is that?

Rollback (the system name for this function is data recovery) is the return of the operating system to the restore point that was created before the failure occurred due to damage to the OS or its individual components. The reasons why it can be damaged are abound:

  1. The system file can be "eaten" by a virus, after which the operating system refuses to work. Or it is simply struck by a virus program, after which it is blocked or deleted by the antivirus.
  2. An important component has been deleted by the user himself by accident or by ignorance.
  3. There was an established third-party program that hurt the operating system.
  4. Downloaded Windows updates began to conflict with the old, resulting in the computer began to "slow down" and work worse.

It can be said that rollback is like a lifeline for the user, because he is able to return Windows 7 to a normal state. In this case, you do not have to reinstall it.

Restoring the system

Go to Start // All Programs // Standard // Service and click on "System Restore".

When it opens, click "Next", then select from the list of restore points the one that was saved before the problem occurred.

If you are interested in what programs are missing, click the "Search for affected programs" button. We pass on and start rolling back. This will put the OS in order, but some utilities or drivers will need to be reinstalled.

Through Safe Mode

It often happens that some error occurs during startup, so it's not possible to load the desktop and roll back the settings. Therefore, you can enter using "Safe Mode".

We reboot the computer and press F8 before loading Windows 7. It is worth noting that for some laptops, the F1-12 keys are only activated in combination with the Fn switch button (in most cases, you can find it at the bottom left). In this case, press Fn and press F8.

From the list of functions that appears, select "Safe Mode". Do not be afraid of the screen resolution of 600x400 or 800x600, this is normal. Next, we find the system recovery program in the "Start" and follow the previous instructions on how to do a rollback.

Using the boot disk

It happens, when you can not enter the computer using "Safe Mode", and accordingly it is impossible to rollback. This is solved quite simply when using a boot disk. All you need is to have it. We insert the boot disk into the disk drive, reboot the computer. If the drive is not in the priority, i.e., is not in the first place in the list of the priority launch, we go into the BIOS in the Boot partition and put it first, save and exit there. When the "installer" of Windows 7 starts up, set the language to Russian (although it is possible and another) and click the inscription "System Restore" located at the bottom left. From the list again, select "System Restore", after which we go through the already known procedure and roll back updates and settings.

By the way, if there is a boot flash drive, the order of treatment is the same, only in the priority of the download it will be necessary to put it.

Create a recovery point

You can restore the computer only if you have a saved restore point. If it is not there is a problem, since it will be impossible to rollback. Therefore, it is necessary to create it.

Right click on the label "My Computer" (if there is no such desktop, then open the "Start" menu and do it there) and select "Properties".

In the "Toolbar" on the right side click on the "Protection of the system" and look at the plate where the disks are displayed.

If there is an inscription "On" opposite to a certain disk (basically a system disk), then do not worry, because the save point function is available. If there is "Disabled", click "Configure". There we put the switch on the item "Restore system parameters and previous versions of files". And from below we choose the size of disk space (it is desirable to take at least 1.5-2 GB). Click "Apply" and "OK". You can also create a manual return label. For this we press "Create", somehow call it, and it's ready.

Now a copy of the system will be kept from time to time, and possibly will rollback. It's a good news. But there is a small nuance. The protection settings will be preserved mainly before installing some programs and will always be interchangeable when there is not enough space for new backups. Therefore, it's better to allocate 5-10 gigabytes for this operation (all depends on the disk's capabilities), so that there are more labels with an earlier date in the return list.

Creating in automatic mode

You can make sure that the recovery data is kept strictly on schedule. The easiest way to do this is as follows:

  • Press Win + R or open "Start" and in the search write "Run".
  • In the line write taskschd.msc, click OK. The scheduler opens.
  • In the tree on the left side, open the \\ Microsoft \\ Windows \\ SystemRestore Library. Click twice on the SR file.

  • Go to the tab "Triggers", select the desired one and press change. Here, we set up the schedule at our discretion (for example, one trigger is set for weekly creation every Saturday at 0 hours, and the second - when the computer is turned on).
  • Next, go to the "Conditions" tab and configure some conditions for creating an automatic save point. If they are not needed, you can turn them off.

Now you do not have to worry about the recovery point and how to roll back the system to Windows.
