Winter garlic: growing and grooming

Garlic - a culture unpretentious and grow it is quite simple. The planting can be done both in spring and in autumn. Winter method allows you to receive higher yields. Therefore it is used by truck farmers much more often than spring.

Winter garlic, the cultivation of which involves the appearance of the root system before the soil freezes, is planted in September. If the autumn is warm you can wait until the end of the month. Otherwise, it should be done in mid-September. Before the onset of winter bulbs should grow roots of at least 10 cm in length. The timing of the planting of garlic can be different for different regions of Russia. The main thing is that before the onset of frost has passed no less than 40 - 50 days.

Planting garlic winter crops begins with the preparation of bulbs. They are brought into a cool room for 2 - 3 weeks. The temperature of the air in the storage location should be approximately +3 - +4 gr. Celsius. The day before planting on the beds they need to be divided into denticles, which are distributed in size. At this time, also begin to prepare a garden. The earth must be dig deep, at least two bayonets of shovels. This can protect plants from damage stem nematode.

Planted denticles to a depth of about 9 cm. Winter garlic, the cultivation of which must be done using mulching, is covered with a layer of humus 2 cm thick. This will not only allow the denticles to winter better, but also prevent the formation of a crust on the surface of the bed in the spring period. The distance between the denticles during landing depends on their size. Large planted at a rate of 15 pieces per 1 square meter, medium, respectively, - 20 pcs. And small - 25. Before landing, they can also be soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate. This will be a good prevention from various pests.

Garlic winter, planting which, as already said, begins in September, gives the first shoots in late April or early May. During this period, it needs to be fed. It is best to use ammonium nitrate. The second feeding is carried out somewhere in the middle of June, and the third - after the appearance of the seventh leaf. It is necessary to delete the arrows, since if left, the yield will be three times less. Leave only a few pieces with inflorescences on the seeds.

When is it better to collect winter garlic? Growing it ends at the end of July. At this time, the leaves of the plants begin to turn yellow and lie down on the ground. The protective film of the inflorescence bursts. For the harvesting of seeds, cut off arrows with inflorescences about 25-30 cm in length. They need to be connected in several pieces and brought to a warm room for ripening. Cleaning should be done only in dry weather.

After the work related to the harvesting of the seeds has been carried out, they start collecting the bulbs themselves. For this, plants are excavated from the ground and laid in rows along the perimeter of the bed. Here they need to be left for a while for drying. Then, the bulb is cut from the bulb in such a way that a single-inch-thick knife remains. The roots are also trimmed carefully, trying not to touch the bottom.

Well, now, apparently, you understand how to get winter garlic. Growing it up is absolutely nothing complicated. Even a novice inexperienced gardener can cope with this task.
