Removing claws in cats - is there an alternative?

In cats and cats, nature has instincts that cause them to sharpen claws on a horizontal or vertical surface. In nature, animals often use tree trunks for this. Living in the house, they, naturally, will find for themselves the corresponding object, often, according to the owners, absolutely not suitable for this: an armchair, a sofa or a bedside table. To avoid damage to furniture, some cat owners go to extreme measures - removing claws from cats or cats. However, it should be understood: this operation is far from harmless, and in some cases even dangerous.

To save cats from claws, they remove the first phalanxes on each of the fingers. During and after the operation, the animals experience severe pain. The removal of claws in cats and cats is carried out under general anesthesia - the animal will retreat after it for several hours. Coming to itself, it can begin to randomly move, trying to jump and falling on the paws, - wounds as a result begin to heal. Heals paws long and painfully: at best the animal will begin to rely on them in a day. A few days in a row will have to put on the neck a special collar that does not allow the cat to reach the paws (to avoid seizure of the seams). She will stop limping only after a week. It is safe to transfer this operation only to a young and healthy animal, therefore, if you have not removed the claws of a kitten, it is no longer necessary to perform an operation on an adult cat.

Having decided on surgical intervention, pay attention to the choice of the clinic and veterinarian. Unsuccessfully carried out removal of claws in cats is fraught with serious complications: severe inflammation, ostiomyelitis, and impaired motor functions. In the latter case, the animal will be afraid to rely on the paws, although it has been a long time since the operation. It is assumed that he has the so-called phantom pains, when the remote phalanx hurts. This assumption has not yet been proved, however, the fact is clear: the movements of the animal can change forever, and you will not be able to correct it. Therefore, when deciding on removing the claws of a cat or cat, think a thousand times whether it should be done. In extreme cases, remove the claws only on the front paws - often this is enough to ensure that the animal does not cause trouble to others.

An alternative may be a scratching: if you accustom an animal to sharpen claws in a certain place, your problems will be resolved by themselves. Before you attach it, observe the actions of the cat. Find out if she prefers scratching horizontal or vertical surfaces, which material is more to her liking. Depending on this, you can buy a scratching blade or make it yourself - for example, from a piece of wood, covered with carpet. A good effect also gives clipping claws. For the first time, it is better to contact the veterinarian for this, and then you will be able to trim the claws of the pet yourself. It should be noted that not all cats and cats will behave calmly during such a procedure - you may need the help of another person. However, no matter how negative your pet is related to this action, it is certainly much less traumatic than the removal of claws in cats and cats.

There is another way to keep the furniture intact and protect yourself from scratches by yourself: special silicone pads that are put on the animal for every claw - they can be purchased at pet stores. In most cases, these measures are sufficient. It should also be understood that the removal of claws in cats and cats can completely change their character, and the affectionate animal will become vicious - instead of claws, it will use its teeth.

From all that has been said, it can be concluded that the removal of claws by an animal is, perhaps, only if it aggressively and often attacks others - especially young children. First, it is worth trying to wean the cat to rush at people, and only if these measures do not bring results, decide on the removal.
