Pskov is the airport of the future

Our country is famous for its air gates. There is a fairly well-founded opinion that with their help you can easily reach virtually anywhere in the world. And Pskov is an airport that can easily serve as a confirmation of this statement. Today we will talk about it in more detail.

Section 1. General information about an important strategic object

Airport Pskov (Kresty), located in a suburb near Pskov, belongs to the international class of service and today accepts aircraft of various types and classifications.

The joint-deployment airfield is also subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Pskov is an airport in the territory of which the 334th regiment of Russian military transport aircraft is stationed, equipped with heavy military aircraft Il-76. The basic airline is Pskovavia. The airport serves both domestic and international flights.

In general, Pskov is an airport considered one of the safest in Russia. During the existence of the air transport complex, only a few episodes of emergency occurred at this aerodrome. In the summer of 1969, a frontal collision of the Air Force wing of the 334 An-12 regiment with another An-12 aircraft occurred on a flight in error by ATC services. All the crew members were killed. In the same year on October 1, due to difficult weather conditions, the AN-12 collided with the tail of another AN-12 vessel. Only the co-pilot, who catapulted on the parachute, remained alive. In July 1993, a fire occurred on board the IL-76, which caused the destruction of the aircraft and the death of the crew. On the site of the crash of Il-76, a monument was erected from the remains of the aircraft.

Section 2. "Pskov" is an airport with a long history

The opening of the airport occurred in 1944, and in 1975 the terminal building and other production facilities were built. At the end of 1994, the airport began to serve international flights.

But in the late nineties civilian air transportations practically were not carried out. The reason for this was the complicated economic situation in the country and the inadequate state of the airfield.

After reconstruction in 2006, the runway increased by 500 meters, equipment meeting international standards and modernizing the meteorological services for flights was installed. Also, a modern fuel-filling complex was built. In general, the quality of passenger service has improved.

In 2007, the airline Pskovavia resumed flights to Moscow and back. And in August 2013 the route to St. Petersburg was opened.

Section 3. Prospects for development

According to experts, Pskov is an airport, which in the future may become an additional landing strip for the Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg.

This direction was considered at a conference in the press center of the Media Holding of the Pskov region, which was devoted to the development of the Pskovavia enterprise and aviation in the region. The meeting also discussed the issue of the revival and expansion of passenger air traffic carried out by Pskovavia in recent years.

Under the decree of the President of the country Vladimir Putin, the airline should soon become subordinate to the Pskov region. It is planned to create a company of interregional significance on the basis of Pskovavia, covering the entire North-West Federal District of Russia.

Currently, the airport's airport runway is undergoing a reconstruction that requires large investments. Upon completion of work, the question of a spare airport for Pulkovo can be considered closed.

To date, Pskov airport, whose schedule can be read on its website, is going to purchase two 50 local Bombardier-200 aircraft.
