The future great athlete and international grandmaster was born in early May 1941 in Georgia. In the family, almost everyone was fond of chess, so little Nona Gaprindashvili mastered this game from an early age. This was facilitated by the fact that her brothers were constantly engaged with her and participated in city competitions themselves.

At the first championship Nona got by accident. Should have been her brothers, but one of them caught a cold, and urgently needed to look for a replacement. Nona was included in the list, and her first opponent, who was much older and more experienced, quickly put on the mat, which attracted the attention of the coaches. At the age of 12 she entered the school for chess players.

The first leader and mentor of Nona Gaprindashvili becomes Karseladze Vakhtang Ilich, who not only took care of her during training, but also defended her from the enthusiastic audience and fans during the championships. To the higher awards and competitions at the strongest level, a young chess player was trained by the well-known coach Mikhail Shishov in the USSR, grand master Aivar Gipslis helped him.

Nona Gaprindashvili was born in a large family. She had 5 older brothers, thanks to whom she got carried away with chess. The father of the future grandmaster worked in the technical school of the city of Zugdidi, where the whole family lived, the teacher of accounting. Mother, Vera Grigolia, kept housekeeping and kept order in the house.

Son David since childhood accompanied his famous mother in the championships and was present at almost all awards. Currently he works in the UK, where he lives with his family. Until 1990, she participated in many competitions and Olympics, taking prizes and adding to her treasury new victories and regalia. She was awarded orders, medals and badges of honor not only for victories, but also for her contribution to the development of the game in the country.
