Movies about elves, gnomes, orcs: the list of the best

The unprecedented popularity and demand for the fantasy film genre has recently acquired a truly global scope at the level of popularity of the film industry itself. "Officially" this subgenre originates in fiction, where it received its first characteristics and general outlines. Modern canons of the progenitor of fantasy position science fiction, which is rather controversial, given that this genre exists despite all the proven scientific truths and postulates, being a real fantasy. Proof can serve as a film about elves, gnomes, orcs, a list of which is presented in this publication.

Archetypes of the genre

In the majority of cases, cinematography operates so-called races, conventionally classified as follows:

  • Elves - outwardly like people, magical creatures, ancient long-livers, wielding magic and protecting nature.
  • Orcs - invented by J. Tolkien barbarians, more like monkeys.
  • Ogres and Trolls are mostly giants, less often cannibals that do not differ intellectually.
  • Halflings are dwarfs like the hobbit of the same Tolkien.
  • Gnomes are short stumpy creatures, underground inhabitants, less often the spirits of the earth.
  • Fairies are mythological beings of subtle metaphysical nature, leading a hidden lifestyle, possessing supernatural abilities.

Today, the fantasy cinematographer embraces an endless variety of trends, based on mythology and folklore. It's no wonder that movies about elves and orcs are so popular, because humanity has always attracted all the unknown. Although the popularity among filmmakers, all these mythological creatures are much inferior to vampires, werewolves, aliens and other characters.

Elves in movies and cartoons

Movies about elves, the list of which is presented below, includes both art and animation.

For the most part, elven films present these fabulous creatures in a positive light. Confirm this statement can the work of director Luis Sandrini "When the Elves Hunt Partridges" (1955). An interesting exception was Jeffrey Mandela's horror film The Elves (1989), which will tell you what happens when you accidentally wake up evil little creatures.

Christmas stories and more ...

List of kinotrilogii has three main paintings of Peter Jackson on the original book and the addition can be considered kinotriliyu on the book "The Hobbit: there and back", two parts of which have already appeared at the box office.

In addition to the legendary works of the attention of viewers, the picture of the joint production of Germany and the USA "Elf" (2003) deserves of course. This touching film tells the story of an ordinary child who happened to be at the North Pole and brought up by elves. It does not fit into the traditional format, which has movies about elves, the Japanese anime series "Elven Song" (2004), in it the main character is not a fairy creature, but genetically modified.
