Monument to Cyril and Methodius in Moscow and Murmansk: history and photo

Historical reference

These events began in the year eight hundred and sixty-two, when Prince Rostislav sent with his ambassadors an application to the Roman lands, so that enlightened people could be sent to carry the word of God to Moravia (Bulgaria).

This mission was entrusted to the brothers - Methodius and Cyril. They were famous for their education, intelligence and Christian good deeds.

The brothers were born in the family of a serviceman, the head of Thessaloniki.

Cyril was younger than Methodius. He studied in glorious Constantinople, was strong in the sciences, and Magnaurus University took him to his walls for teaching. He was also appointed mentor to the young Emperor Michael the Third. Even the nickname of Cyril was - "philosopher".

The elder of the seven brothers - Methodius was in the military service, which he followed after his father. About a dozen years managed one Slavic region, and after he left for the monastery, but in all diligently helped the younger one.

Arriving in Moravia with the students, the brothers, or rather Cyril, made up the alphabet for the Old Slavonic language. According to her, comrades translated the main Christian books from Greek.

A lot of work was done, but the Roman church did not appreciate the work of the brothers, defining only three sacred languages for the true word of God - Jewish, Greek, Latin.

Upon his return to Rome, Cyril overcame a serious illness, and a month and a half later he passed away. His brother left again for Moravia. There he served all his life for the benefit of enlightenment and Orthodoxy.

In the eight hundred and seventy-sixth year Methodius achieved the same permission to read the sermons in the Slavonic language and translated it into the Old Testament.

Description

The monument to Cyril and Methodius in Moscow is a monument. It consists of a pedestal and two statues - the brothers stand side by side in full growth. In the hands of Methodius and Cyril hold the main attributes of Orthodoxy - the cross and the Holy Scripture. Before the monument stands a lamp with "eternal" unquenchable fire.

Where is it?

The monument to Cyril and Methodius in Moscow was opened in 1992. The event was timed to the holiday dedicated to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture (the twenty-fourth of May is the day of Cyril's memory).

The monument to Cyril and Methodius stands at the entrance to Ilinsky Square. Previously, there was a Hall of Fame where industrial enterprises of the Moscow region posted photos of their foremost people during Soviet times.

Traditions

Monument in Muransk: history

The monument to Cyril and Methodius in Moscow by its very existence is due to the active work of Murmansk writers.

It was there, in the Arctic, since 1986 began to celebrate the Day of Slavic writing and culture. After a while, the date was made public and began to celebrate throughout the country.

In 1988, a group of Soviet writers was on an official visit to Bulgaria. There, the idea arose - to put a monument to the authors of the Slavic alphabet in Murmansk. It's not just putting it, but giving it as a token of gratitude to the residents of the city for the revival of this cultural tradition in Russia.

Murmansk: a monument to Cyril and Methodius

The monument in this city exactly repeats the monument, which is in Sofia at the entrance to the National Library.

The statues of Cyril and Methodius are cast from bronze. They are standing on a pedestal of concrete. Under the whole composition there is a solid foundation, it consists of twelve plates of granite.

To this day, graphic images of the Enlightenment have not reached. But the author (Vladimir Ginovski) created laconic and majestic images. Cyril is a young man with a thin, spiritual face. His hand holds a feather. Methodius - a mature man with a strong and wise eyes, in his hand the Holy Scripture. Both are dressed in the clothes of the monks of their time, in their hands they have a scroll with the beginning of the Slavic alphabet. A copy of the monument was created by the author of the original.

The monument was consecrated by His Holiness Patriarch of Bulgaria Maxim on Bulgaria's Independence Day (May 3, 1990). After the consecration ceremony, the monument to the enlighteners Cyril and Methodius was officially handed over to the representatives of the city of Murmansk.

The truck, which transported the monument six meters high, overcame more than four thousand kilometers. Along the way, participants along with valuable cargo visited such Slavic cities as Varna, Odessa, Kiev, Minsk, Novgorod, Petrozavodsk. The Black Sea was on the ferry.

And on May twenty-second of the same year, a square near the building of the regional scientific library in Murmansk was announced with solemn speeches about the discovery of this remarkable monument.

In the square there is not only a monument with a base, but also a playground in front of it, decorated with fragments of stone. The square itself is framed by gray granite blocks. But that is not all. In the plans of architects, to restore the pedestal, lining it with a monolithic polished stone, which should decorate with several belts an ornament consisting of the letters of the Old Slavonic alphabet.
